Job Summary
The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a Physics, Engineering, Astronomy Lab or Student Assistant ¿ Institutional Student Worker on the Gainesville campus. This position supports instructional activities within the Physics, Engineering, and Astronomy programs by assisting faculty, supporting student learning, and helping maintain safe, effective instructional environments.
The student assistant may be assigned to one or more specialty areas based on departmental needs, including laboratory support, grading assistance, and 3D printing operations. This role provides hands-on experience in an academic setting while promoting student safety, engagement, and successful course delivery.
Responsibilities
  • Depending on assignment, duties may include but are not limited to the following:
  • General Support
    - Serve as a second point of contact in instructional spaces to support student well-being and promote a safe learning environment.
    - Provide guidance to students by answering general questions and assisting when clarification is needed, referring complex or course-specific questions to the instructor as appropriate.
    - Assist faculty and staff in maintaining clean, organized, and safe laboratory and instructional spaces.
    - Follow all university and departmental safety protocols and procedures.
  • Laboratory Support
    - Assist with the setup, monitoring, and breakdown of instructional laboratory activities across Physics, Engineering, and Astronomy courses.
    - Help ensure laboratory equipment and materials are prepared and functioning properly prior to instructional use.
    - Observe laboratory sessions to provide an additional set of eyes for safety and student support.
  • Grading Support
    - Assist faculty with grading assignments, quizzes, or coursework as directed.
    - Handle graded materials in a confidential and professional manner in accordance with university policies.
    - Provide organizational support related to coursework assessment as needed.
  • 3D Printing Support
    - Assist with the operation, monitoring, and basic maintenance of departmental 3D printers.
    - Support faculty and students with 3D printing projects by helping prepare files, manage print queues, and monitor active prints.
    - Help maintain an organized and safe 3D printing workspace, including routine cleanup and reporting equipment issues.

Required Qualifications
  • Must be enrolled at the University of North Georgia in a minimum of six (6) credit hours to qualify as a student worker.
