They work under the supervision of an experienced school principal to gain hands-on experience in school administration, leadership, and management. Principal Interns are involved in various aspects of running a school, such as observing classrooms, handling discipline, participating in staff meetings, and supporting school initiatives. This role helps them develop the skills and knowledge needed to become effective school principals in the future.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a principal intern expect to handle during their internship?

As a Principal Intern, you can expect to work closely with school administrators on a variety of tasks, such as assisting with daily operations, supporting teacher evaluations, helping to coordinate school events, and analyzing student data to inform decisions. You may also have opportunities to lead small initiatives or committees, gaining hands-on experience in leadership and school management. This role offers valuable exposure to the challenges of balancing administrative duties with fostering a positive school culture, and provides mentorship from experienced principals to support your professional growth.

Familiarity with student information systems, learning management platforms, and data analysis tools is typically expected. Strong interpersonal skills, such as communication, organization, and problem-solving, help you connect with staff, students, and the wider school community. Dive into DIRECTV for Business as a Summer Intern!

The work our team does directly impacts the DIRECTV customer experience through providing support for our Product Development organization by working on real-world problems relating to the overarching customer experience.

This in-person role is based in Clarksburg, Maryland. The selected candidate will work with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to create innovative video solutions for the commercial market.

Project Examples

  • Develop artificial intelligence and machine learning tools
  • Contribute to the development of an AI-powered media intelligence platform that analyzes live and recorded video content.
  • Work with video metadata, closed captions, speech-to-text transcripts, and AI/ML models to identify topics, summarize content, detect relevant events, and enable natural-language search across video streams.
  • Evaluating AI models, developing data-processing pipelines, experimenting with embeddings and semantic search, and building prototype tools or dashboards to demonstrate new media intelligence use cases.

What We're Looking For

  • Students pursuing a four-year undergraduate or advanced degree in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or Data Science.
  • Required: Proficiency in Python and its ML ecosystem (NumPy and pandas), with the ability to write reproducible training and evaluation scripts.
  • Assist in selecting the appropriate machine learning approach (supervised, unsupervised, deep learning, or reinforcement learning) based on problem type and data availability
  • Support the end-to-end model development lifecycle, including data collection, preprocessing, feature extraction and selection, training, and validation
  • Build and benchmark baseline models in Python, including linear regression, decision trees, and support vector machines, for classification and regression tasks
  • Operating Systems and tools: Linux and/or Android, Claude Code and OpenAI API
  • Apply unsupervised learning techniques such as clustering, principal component analysis, and association rule mining to explore unlabeled datasets
  • Identify and address overfitting and underfitting, applying bias-variance trade-off analysis during model tuning and selection
  • Evaluate model performance using appropriate metrics (accuracy, precision, recall, mean squared error) and recommend evaluation criteria suited to the problem domain
  • Experiment with ensemble methods (bagging, boosting, random forests) to improve prediction accuracy and generalization over single-model baselines
  • Prototype deep learning architectures - CNNs for image data, RNNs for sequential data, and transformers for NLP - using PyTorch or TensorFlow
  • Support experimentation with generative AI setups, including transformer-based language models and GANs for synthetic data generation
  • Cross functional collaboration; Strong presentation skills

Program Details

  • Duration: 10-week internship (3-5 days per week in the Clarksburg, MD office)
  • Program Dates: 6/7/27 - 8/13/27 or 6/14/27 - 8/20/27
