Introduction

The Prince William County Department of Public Works Construction & Operations Division is looking for a knowledgeable, reliable, and hard-working person to lead our Survey Crew as a Principal Engineer. The Survey Crew is vital to the success of Prince William County infrastructure, which protects our roads, houses, rivers and streams. If this sounds like you, apply now!
About This Role: This position requires a thorough understanding of construction activities and industry-standard surveying practices. Utilizing modern surveying equipment, this position leads a two-person crew responsible for construction sitework layout, stationing, constructability reviews, as-builts, property corner location, and similar activities. The Licensed Surveyor will approve and/or seal plats, as-builts, and other related documents. This class is part of a Principal Engineer Job Family. This position requires technical understanding and working knowledge of engineering/surveying practices and ability to perform related tasks.
Minimum Requirements
  • Licensed Surveyor (LS) in the State of Virginia; Candidates that have qualified for the LS exam but have not received licensure by the closing date of this posting must achieve LS within 1 year of start date.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited university, and 3 years of related experience.

Related experience includes:
  • Proficient knowledge and use of modern surveying equipment and related software.
  • Development and layout/stakeout of construction-related grades/cut sheets.
  • Creation of plats with easements using software and field conditions.
  • Location of property corners based on available field conditions and records.
  • Accurate documentation and creation of as-builts per industry standards.
  • Working knowledge of construction activities and costs.
  • Ability to work in both office and field locations in varying weather conditions.
  • Working knowledge of industry-related safety requirements.

Preferences:
  • 5 years or more years of related experience including proficient operation of modern surveying equipment, integration of field data into Computer Aided Design software, grading plans and layouts, and development of plats;
  • Staff/Crew Supervision;
  • Certification in OSHA 10;
  • Certification in VDOT Work Area Protection (Intermediate);

Special Requirements:
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License; Must pass local, state, and federal background check; Must be able to gain access to Marine Corps Base Quantico.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age to perform duties which involve handling, applying or otherwise working with hazardous materials.
  • Position typically requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, and grasping light to heavy objects.
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently.
  • Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.

Work Schedule:
Normal work week is Monday-Friday 7:00 am-3:00 pm, with a 7.5-hour workday and half-hour lunch, total of 8.0 hour day. Some Saturday work could be required to support crews and projects on rare occasions. This position may also be required to provide support during inclement weather and emergency related events.
Starting Salary Range:
$91,162.50-$129,253
