Job description

Director of Marketing Ops

Position: Director of Marketing Ops
Employment Type: Full-Time
Department: Digital + Technology
Reports To: COO
Location: Lubbock, TX or Remote
Compensation: Starting at $85,000

Position Overview

Primitive is a creative and growth agency — and Marketing Ops is how we make sure what we build for clients is measurable, connected, and performing.

This role represents a meaningful shift in how we approach that work — moving from reactive execution to a strategy-first discipline with real structure behind it. You'll operate at two levels: partnering with Client Strategy on the marketing ops approach for each account, and working with the COO to build the team, processes, and standards that make it repeatable across the agency.

This role is for someone who wants to build something — not inherit it.

Key ResponsibilitiesClient Marketing Operations
  • Strategy:
    • Client: Partner with Client Strategy on the marketing ops approach for each account — ensuring every client has the right infrastructure, toolset, and execution plan tied to their goals
    • Agency: In partnership with the COO, build out the frameworks, standards, and team structure that govern how marketing ops is delivered across the agency
  • Execution: Own client workstreams across accounts as the day-to-day lead for marketing ops
  • Martech: Own the client tech stack — configuring platforms and building the automations and workflows that drive how clients attract, nurture, and convert. Tools vary by client and include HubSpot, Klaviyo, Whatagraph, Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics, and others
  • Collaboration: Partner with Client Services, Creative, and Development to integrate digital work early and keep execution precise across every account
Paid Media & Attribution
  • Strategy Alignment: Work with Client Strategy and Pathlabs (our media partner) to ensure campaigns align with goals — you don’t run the media, but you own whether it’s measurable
  • Attribution: Own conversion tracking, attribution infrastructure, and implementation across accounts — in coordination with Development
  • Reporting: Drive performance reporting that surfaces real insight, not just platform numbers
SEO & AEO
  • Strategy: Lead SEO and AEO strategy and implementation across client accounts
  • Technical: Partner with the Director of Development to ensure technical SEO and AEO are built correctly during site builds and web changes — and own the ongoing audit cycle and fixes
  • Content: Collaborate with the Copy team on keyword strategy and content alignment
  • AI Research & Tools: Research, evaluate, and implement AI-powered tools and workflows across SEO and AEO delivery — identifying what genuinely improves Primitive's speed, accuracy, and effectiveness, and building the processes that put those gains into practice across client accounts
  • Local & Reputation: Manage Google Business Profile setup, performance, and optimization across client accounts — and own review and reputation management, identifying the tools and workflows to streamline and automate as much of the process as possible
AI Optimization
  • Service Line: Lead the build-out of Primitive’s AI Optimization offering — defining how we help clients identify, adopt, and integrate AI tools and workflows into their operations
  • Client Delivery: Partner with clients to surface practical AI applications — from task automation to workflow improvement — and build the processes that make adoption stick and deliver results
  • Agency Leadership: Stay current on the AI tools and platforms reshaping how businesses operate, and position Primitive as the partner clients turn to when they’re ready to move
Analytics & Reporting
  • Infrastructure: Own GA4, Google Tag Manager, and tracking setup across accounts — coordinating with Development on correct implementation
  • Reporting: Build reporting structures that give Strategy, Account Management, and clients clear, actionable visibility into performance
  • Analysis: Turn data into compelling narratives and visuals — supporting client strategy conversations, building trust, and driving decisions
  • AI-Powered Processes: Identify and implement AI tools and workflows that accelerate reporting, surface insights faster, and cut down on manual work across the analytics function
Team Leadership & Development
  • People: Lead and mentor Marketing Ops Specialists — setting standards, providing feedback, and supporting professional growth
  • Priorities: Manage team workload in close coordination with Project Management and Account Management
  • Culture: Build a team centered on curiosity, accountability, and continuous improvement
Digital Innovation & Trends
  • Awareness: Stay current on digital marketing, martech, SEO, AI tooling, and platform changes — and surface what matters before it becomes urgent
  • Innovation: Bring new tools, practices, and ideas that keep Primitive ahead of the curve

Success in This Role Looks Like
  • Every client account has clean, trackable marketing ops — reliable attribution, a well-managed martech stack, and measurement tied to real outcomes
  • Marketing Ops is embedded early in the strategy process — not retrofitted after the fact
  • Technical SEO and performance are consistently strong across client websites
  • AI is embedded across the platforms this role operates in — HubSpot, ClickUp, Whatagraph, and Claude — and you're actively using and building with it to improve how we work and what we deliver for clients
  • Marketing Ops is growing and delivering to a consistent quality standard
  • Primitive is ahead of digital trends — not catching up

Qualifications & Skills
  • 5+ years in digital marketing, marketing operations, and marketing technology — agency or in-house
  • Experience leading a team and managing multiple client accounts simultaneously
  • Fluency in HubSpot and the broader martech stack (Klaviyo, MailChimp, Shopify); strong working knowledge of GA4, Google Tag Manager, and attribution — including implementation in collaboration with development teams
  • Hands-on experience building automations and workflows in Claude — this is the primary AI platform we use internally and the one you'll work in daily
  • Proven experience in email and SMS marketing strategy — segmentation, automation, deliverability, and performance optimization
  • Strong understanding of paid media strategy — you don’t run campaigns, but you own whether they’re measurable
  • Solid grasp of SEO, AEO, technical SEO, and emerging AI optimization
  • Clear communicator and systems thinker — you translate technical context for non-technical audiences and design the process before you execute it
Tools & Platforms
  • SEO & Research: SEMRush, Google Search Console, SpyFu, Google Business Profile
  • Paid Media: Works alongside Pathlabs (Google Ads, Meta Ads, programmatic) — focus on attribution and measurement
  • MarTech & Automation: HubSpot, Google Tag Manager, Klaviyo, MailChimp, Shopify
  • Analytics & Reporting: GA4, Whatagraph, Databox, native platform analytics
  • AI & Automation Claude (primary platform for workflow automation and internal ops), HubSpot AI, ChatGPT, n8n and similar integration tools
  • Project Management: ClickUp or similar project management platforms

Growth Path

As the Director of Marketing Ops, you’ll help shape what this team becomes. As Primitive’s digital practice grows, this role grows with it — building team capacity, expanding service delivery, and becoming a defining voice in how we take clients’ marketing operations to the next level.
