What are some common challenges faced by professionals in precision hydraulics, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in precision hydraulics often encounter challenges such as diagnosing complex system malfunctions, ensuring contamination control, and maintaining high-precision components under demanding conditions. Addressing these requires a solid understanding of hydraulic schematics, meticulous attention to cleanliness, and ongoing training in the latest technologies. Collaborating closely with engineers, machine operators, and maintenance teams can help quickly resolve issues and prevent system downtime. Staying current with industry best practices and manufacturer recommendations also supports effective troubleshooting and system optimization.

What are Precision Hydraulics?

Precision Hydraulics refers to the design, manufacture, maintenance, and repair of hydraulic systems and components that require high accuracy and performance. Professionals in this field work with machines and equipment that use pressurized fluids to transmit power, such as in manufacturing, construction, and aerospace industries. They ensure that hydraulic systems operate smoothly, efficiently, and safely, often troubleshooting and fine-tuning them for optimal performance. Precision Hydraulics specialists may also be involved in custom system design and retrofitting older equipment to meet modern standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Precision Hydraulics Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Precision Hydraulics Technician, you need strong mechanical aptitude, knowledge of hydraulic systems, and typically a technical diploma or certification in hydraulics or industrial maintenance. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, hydraulic schematics, and maintenance management systems is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication set standout technicians apart. These competencies ensure safe, efficient system operation and minimize costly downtime in industrial environments.

Job Title: Hydraulic Cylinder Build & Test Specialist
Company: DNC Hydraulics LLC
Employment Type: Full-Time w/Overtime

About DNC Hydraulics:
DNC Hydraulics is a fast-growing hydraulic service, repair, and manufacturing company serving heavy industry, steel mills, and demanding customers who expect work done right - not done twice. We specialize in complex hydraulic cylinders where precision, reliability, and pride in craftsmanship matter. This is not a production-line assembly. This is skilled mechanical work from start to finish.

Position Overview:
The Hydraulic Cylinder Build & Test Specialist is responsible for assembling, testing, and finalizing hydraulic cylinders to exact specifications. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the finesse to work with tight tolerances, seals, and finishes without damage. If you enjoy building complex mechanical systems, seeing a job through to completion, and knowing your work directly impacts customer uptime - this role is for you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assemble hydraulic cylinders according to drawings, specifications, and work orders.
  • Install seals, bearings, pistons, rods, and components with precision and care.
  • Perform pressure testing, function testing, and final inspections.
  • Identify issues during assembly or testing and communicate clearly with analysts or leadership.
  • Maintain clean, organized work areas and proper handling of precision components.
  • Follow quality standards, safety procedures, and documented processes.
  • Support continuous improvement in build methods, tooling, and workflow.
  • Work additional hours when workload and customer demand require it.

Qualifications:

  • High mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience assembling mechanical or hydraulic components.
  • Strong attention to detail and patience - seal damage, shortcuts, and rework are not acceptable.
  • Ability to read and follow drawings, specifications, and instructions.
  • Comfortable using hand tools, torque tools, measuring equipment, and lifting devices.
  • Pride in craftsmanship and completing jobs correctly the first time.
  • Willingness to work as part of a team and support overall throughput.
  • Reliable attendance and a strong work ethic.

Preferred (but not required):

  • Previous hydraulic cylinder builds or repair experience.
  • Experience with pressure testing hydraulic systems.
  • Exposure to heavy industrial or mill-duty equipment.
  • Familiarity with ERP systems or digital work orders.
  • Trade school or technical training.
  • 3 years' experience at DNC Hydraulics.

Work Expectations:

  • 40 hours is the minimum expectation
  • This role requires flexibility to work approximately 45-55 hours during busy periods.
  • Overtime is workload-driven, not permanent.
  • Team members are expected to support each other when demand is high.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive pay (Salary to be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.)
  • Full-time, consistent hours.
  • Opportunity to grow within a well-established company.
  • Supportive team environment.
  • 401K (After 1 year of service).
  • Health Insurance.
  • 1st shift only with overtime.
  • Great work environment.
