How much do powertrain design release engineer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for powertrain design release engineer in the United States is $42.57, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $38.70 and $44.23 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does a Powertrain Design Release Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a vehicle development project?

A Powertrain Design Release Engineer works closely with teams in manufacturing, validation, procurement, and quality to ensure that powertrain components are designed, tested, and released according to project timelines. They regularly participate in design reviews, coordinate with suppliers to resolve technical issues, and interface with calibration and integration engineers to ensure compatibility with the overall vehicle architecture. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are key, as the engineer often serves as the main point of contact for any changes or issues related to powertrain components throughout the development cycle.

What is a Powertrain Design Release Engineer?

A Powertrain Design Release Engineer is an automotive engineering professional responsible for overseeing the design, development, and release of powertrain components such as engines, transmissions, and driveline systems. They coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure that these components meet performance, quality, and regulatory requirements. Their role includes managing technical specifications, resolving design issues, and supporting product launch activities. Powertrain Design Release Engineers play a crucial part in bringing new vehicle technologies to market efficiently and reliably.

What is the difference between Powertrain Design Release Engineer vs Powertrain Development Engineer?

AspectPowertrain Design Release EngineerPowertrain Development Engineer
Primary FocusOverseeing the release and validation of powertrain components for productionDeveloping and testing new powertrain designs and prototypes
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, quality assurance, supplier coordinationResearch labs, engineering offices, prototype testing facilities
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, experience in vehicle powertrain systemsBachelor's or higher in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, experience in powertrain design and testing

While both roles involve powertrain systems, the Powertrain Design Release Engineer focuses on finalizing and releasing components for production, ensuring quality and compliance. In contrast, the Powertrain Development Engineer is involved in creating and testing new designs during the development phase. Both roles require engineering credentials and industry experience but differ mainly in their project stages and responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Powertrain Design Release Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Powertrain Design Release Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical or automotive engineering, experience with powertrain systems, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software (like CATIA or NX), engineering release systems, and automotive industry standards is essential. Excellent problem-solving, project management, and communication skills enable effective collaboration across teams and the successful delivery of complex components. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring that powertrain designs meet performance, quality, and regulatory requirements while supporting efficient product development cycles.

Job Description:
The Design Release Engineer for powertrain sealing components/systems is responsible for the design, development, and technical leadership in the creation, validation, and release of sealing components/systems for our vehicles. The role involves driving the design through all phases of the product lifecycle, including design concept, engineering validation, and production release through PPAP (Production Part Approval Process).
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design & Development:
    • Lead the design of sealing components, ensuring alignment with vehicle and powertrain requirements.
    • Develop and refine concepts for various sealing components, such as O-rings, PIP gaskets, rear seal retainers, etc... based on functional, safety, and performance requirements.
    • Support CAD modeling, FEA (Finite Element Analysis), and other design validation methods to ensure sealing integrity and compliance with standards.
    • Collaborate with other engineering teams (electrical, thermal, packaging) to integrate sealing components into the overall powertrain architecture.
  • Release & Program Management:
  • Manage design release activities from early concept through production, including the timely completion of B-Sample, C-Sample, X0, X1, X2, and X3 milestones.
  • Own the Bill of Materials (BOM) and Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) for powertrain sealing components.
  • Ensure all parts meet quality, cost, and timing requirements.
  • Drive the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) for powertrain sealing components, ensuring compliance with all regulatory and customer specifications.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, suppliers, and quality, to ensure the successful release and implementation of designs.
  • Technical Guidance & Problem Solving:
    • Provide technical leadership and support during the development and production stages to resolve design issues, material selection challenges, and process-related problems.
    • Lead DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and other risk assessment activities to ensure design robustness and mitigate potential issues.
    • Participate in the development of testing strategies for powertrain sealing components.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:
    • Work closely with suppliers to ensure design feasibility, cost competitiveness, and manufacturability of powertrain sealing components
