How much do powertrain design release engineer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for powertrain design release engineer in the United States is $42.57, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $38.70 and $44.23 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does a Powertrain Design Release Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a vehicle development project?

A Powertrain Design Release Engineer works closely with teams in manufacturing, validation, procurement, and quality to ensure that powertrain components are designed, tested, and released according to project timelines. They regularly participate in design reviews, coordinate with suppliers to resolve technical issues, and interface with calibration and integration engineers to ensure compatibility with the overall vehicle architecture. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are key, as the engineer often serves as the main point of contact for any changes or issues related to powertrain components throughout the development cycle.

What is a Powertrain Design Release Engineer?

A Powertrain Design Release Engineer is an automotive engineering professional responsible for overseeing the design, development, and release of powertrain components such as engines, transmissions, and driveline systems. They coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure that these components meet performance, quality, and regulatory requirements. Their role includes managing technical specifications, resolving design issues, and supporting product launch activities. Powertrain Design Release Engineers play a crucial part in bringing new vehicle technologies to market efficiently and reliably.

What is the difference between Powertrain Design Release Engineer vs Powertrain Development Engineer?

AspectPowertrain Design Release EngineerPowertrain Development Engineer
Primary FocusOverseeing the release and validation of powertrain components for productionDeveloping and testing new powertrain designs and prototypes
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, quality assurance, supplier coordinationResearch labs, engineering offices, prototype testing facilities
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, experience in vehicle powertrain systemsBachelor's or higher in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, experience in powertrain design and testing

While both roles involve powertrain systems, the Powertrain Design Release Engineer focuses on finalizing and releasing components for production, ensuring quality and compliance. In contrast, the Powertrain Development Engineer is involved in creating and testing new designs during the development phase. Both roles require engineering credentials and industry experience but differ mainly in their project stages and responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Powertrain Design Release Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Powertrain Design Release Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical or automotive engineering, experience with powertrain systems, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software (like CATIA or NX), engineering release systems, and automotive industry standards is essential. Excellent problem-solving, project management, and communication skills enable effective collaboration across teams and the successful delivery of complex components. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring that powertrain designs meet performance, quality, and regulatory requirements while supporting efficient product development cycles.

The Design and Release Engineer will provide feasibility input for development of designs from Product Design Office (PDO) concepts, sketch, and clay models. Establish and manage development timeline for life of project. Develop functional objectives, build objectives, DVPR, and DFMEA for components. The Engineer will lead design, while leveraging external design source and/or internal CAD design resource. The Engineer will be responsible for the release of completed component geometry using Teamcenter/NX CAD tools. Validate virtual designs using CAE resources and perform physical validation via component, system, and vehicle level testing. Manage internal documentation for release of systems. Plan and oversee tool construction and production of assemblies. On
site support for vehicle pilot builds and production launch at assembly plant. Responsible for root cause analysis and determination of corrective action for issues with assembly, fit/finish, and functional performance. Analyze and remediate warranty, identify cost reduction opportunities on production of systems, candidate will also be responsible for safety compliance report documents.
This role is for a Design Release Engineer (DRE). This is not a CAD designer role. The DRE will own the part/system and be accountable for cost, quality, and BOM, while working cross-functionally with Studio, suppliers, and internal engineering teams.
