How much do power transmission line jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 28, 2026, the average yearly pay for power transmission line in the United States is $122,133.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $93,500.00 and $153,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are power transmission lines?

Power transmission lines are high-voltage cables or wires that transport electricity over long distances from power plants to substations, where the voltage is reduced for distribution to homes and businesses. They are a critical part of the electrical grid and are typically supported by large towers or poles. Transmission lines are designed to efficiently transmit large amounts of electricity, minimizing energy loss during the process.

What are some common challenges faced by Power Transmission Line workers in the field?

Power Transmission Line workers often encounter challenges such as working at significant heights, exposure to varying weather conditions, and the need to adhere to strict safety protocols. Collaboration with team members is essential to safely complete installations, repairs, and maintenance tasks. Additionally, responding to emergency outages or storm damage can require long hours and quick problem-solving skills, making adaptability and resilience important traits for success in this role.

What is the difference between Power Transmission Line vs Power Distribution Technician?

AspectPower Transmission LinePower Distribution Technician
CertificationsLineworker certification, CDL often requiredElectrical certifications, CDL preferred
Work EnvironmentHigh-voltage outdoor lines, often at great heightsIndoor and outdoor work on distribution systems
Industry UsageDesign, construction, and maintenance of high-voltage transmission linesMaintenance and repair of lower-voltage distribution systems

Power Transmission Line workers focus on high-voltage transmission lines that carry electricity over long distances, often working outdoors at heights. Power Distribution Technicians handle lower-voltage distribution systems, ensuring electricity reaches homes and businesses. While both roles require similar certifications and work in the electrical industry, their primary responsibilities and work environments differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Power Transmission Line Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Power Transmission Line Technician, you need strong electrical knowledge, physical stamina, and a high school diploma or equivalent—often supplemented by an apprenticeship or technical training. Proficiency with climbing gear, line construction tools, bucket trucks, and knowledge of safety protocols such as OSHA standards is essential. Attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills, especially when working in hazardous conditions. These competencies ensure the safe, reliable installation and maintenance of power lines, which are vital for consistent electrical service and public safety.
