Job Description
AECOM is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Traction Power Intern to join our team in the Philadelphia, PA office. This internship offers a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the design, analysis of DC or AC traction power systems for railways, light rail transit (LRT), or other electrified transportation networks. The intern will work closely with experienced engineers and contribute to real-world projects, gaining practical knowledge in a dynamic and challenging environment.
This position is available for this summer, as well as co-op opportunities through the school year.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Assist in the design and analysis of traction power distribution systems, including substations, overhead catenary systems (OCS), and third rail systems.
  • Support the development of electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and equipment layouts.
  • Perform calculations related to voltage drop, current flow, and power system performance.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Conduct field inspections and site visits to gather data and observe construction activities.
  • Assist in the testing and commissioning of traction power equipment.
  • Support the maintenance and troubleshooting of existing traction power systems.
  • Assist in the preparation of as-built drawings and documentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
  • Candidates must be pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related, and must have completed at least one year of study. Candidates who have graduated with a Bachelor's degree and plan to continue with the Master's degree are eligible to apply for the position. Recent graduates must have been enrolled in their bachelor's degree in the most previous school term with an interest in pursuing an advanced degree in the same or similar discipline at the conclusion of the internship.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Basic understanding of electrical power systems and circuit analysis.
  • Familiarity with AC and DC power concepts.
  • Strong interest in railway or transit systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid driver's license (may be required for site visits).
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar drafting software is a plus.
