What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoctoral Human Computer Interaction (HCI) researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Human Computer Interaction researcher, you typically need a Ph.D. in HCI, Computer Science, or a related field, along with a solid background in user-centered design and empirical research methods. Proficiency with prototyping tools, statistical analysis software (such as SPSS or R), and experience in conducting user studies are commonly required. Strong communication, critical thinking, and collaboration skills set candidates apart, as they enable effective teamwork and dissemination of research findings. These skills and qualities are essential for advancing innovative research, publishing impactful work, and contributing to multidisciplinary projects.

What are Postdoctoral Human Computer Interaction researchers?

Postdoctoral Human Computer Interaction (HCI) researchers are scholars who have completed their PhD and are conducting advanced, independent research in the field of HCI. Their work focuses on understanding how people interact with computers and designing technology that improves those interactions. Postdoctoral HCI researchers often work at universities or research institutions, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to explore topics such as usability, user experience, accessibility, and emerging technologies. They contribute to scientific knowledge through publications and may also mentor students or assist with grant writing. This role helps prepare them for academic, industry, or research leadership positions.

What are some common challenges faced by postdoctoral researchers in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), and how can they be addressed?

Postdoctoral researchers in HCI often encounter challenges such as balancing independent research with collaborative projects, managing multidisciplinary teams, and keeping up with rapidly evolving technologies. Navigating these challenges requires strong time management, proactive communication with advisors and colleagues, and staying engaged with the broader HCI community through conferences and seminars. Building a strong professional network and seeking mentorship can also help postdocs identify new opportunities and career directions within academia, industry, or user experience research.

Job description

Overview
Microsoft is a place where passionate innovators come to collaborate, imagine what's possible, and take their careers further. This is a world of more possibilities, more innovation, more openness, and sky's-the-limit thinking in a cloud-enabled world.
Microsoft's Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products spanning databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging and real-time analytics, and business intelligence. Our portfolio includes Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. Our mission is to build the data platform for the age of AI - powering a new class of data-first applications and driving a data culture.
Within Azure Data, the Messaging and Real-Time Analytics team delivers comprehensive solutions and a robust platform that enables customers to ingest high-granularity signals (real-time and observability) and complex data, turning them into a real-time competitive advantage for end users and modern applications.
We are hiring a Designer who is genuinely excited by data (big data) and the people who work in this industry. You bring empathy to high-stakes scenarios, thrive in ambiguity, and are motivated to make advanced data platforms feel clear, capable, and trustworthy for our customers.
In this role, you will:
  • Explore new patterns for human-AI interaction.
  • Prototype and validate ideas with users.
  • Stay close to emerging capabilities as they evolve, balancing craft with speed.
  • Work end-to-end alongside engineers, researchers, data experts, and product leaders across the globe.

If you're a curious person who wants to help redefine real-time data and agentic business operations at scale, we'd love to hear from you. We do not just value differences or different perspectives. We seek them out and invite them in so we can tap into the collective power of everyone in the company. As a result, our customers are better served.
Responsibilities
  • Drive the user experience of key product areas, grounded in deep user empathy and informed by data (JTBD, telemetry, and customer feedback)
  • Own feature areas end-to-end, ensuring high quality, strong craft, and consistency across broader workflows
  • Execute across the full design lifecycle, from concept and ideation through validation, iteration, handoff, and post-ship refinement
  • Design interaction patterns for human/AI collaboration, focusing on clarity, trust, transparency, and appropriate user control
  • Use rapid AI prototyping and user validation to inform decisions and reduce risk ahead of engineering investment
  • Partner closely with engineering, product management, research, and data experts to deliver experiences within technical and performance constraints
  • Navigate ambiguity and constraints effectively, finding practical ways to ship high-quality work in a fast-paced environment
  • Collaborate with other designers to maintain consistency and raise quality, contributing to a strong and growing design culture
  • Embody our culture and values

  • 4+ years experience shipping products, services, or games and/or delivering to customers as a result of an end-to-end design process.
  • Strong command of all aspects and levels of interaction/UX design: from information architecture to design systems thinking, user validation, and AI workflows.
  • Proven experience incorporating AI throughout the product development lifecycle, including ideation, prototyping, validation, and iteration.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage AI tools and workflows to accelerate design outcomes while maintaining a strong focus on usability, trust, transparency, and customer value.
  • Strong systems thinking, including the ability to define clear structures and taxonomies that make complex data and AI-driven experiences understandable and usable.
