Portco information

What is a Portco?

Portco is a shorthand term for 'portfolio company,' which refers to a business that is part of an investment firm's portfolio. Jobs at a Portco typically involve working directly for one of these companies, which are often backed by private equity or venture capital firms. Roles can range widely, from executive leadership to operations, finance, marketing, and technology. Employees at Portcos may benefit from access to resources, expertise, and networks provided by the parent investment firm, and they often work in fast-paced, growth-oriented environments.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a Portco manager?

To thrive as a Portfolio Company Manager, you need a solid background in business management, financial analysis, and strategic planning, typically supported by a degree in business or finance. Familiarity with financial modeling tools, CRM systems, and performance tracking software is essential. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help you drive operational improvements and engage with stakeholders. These capabilities are crucial for delivering growth, maximizing value, and ensuring alignment with investor expectations.

How does working at a Portco differ from working at a larger corporation?

Working at a portfolio company, often referred to as a 'portco,' typically involves a fast-paced and dynamic environment where employees have the opportunity to wear multiple hats and make a tangible impact. Unlike larger corporations with established processes, portcos are often in growth or transformation stages, requiring adaptability and a hands-on approach. Team structures are usually leaner, promoting close collaboration across departments and direct interaction with leadership or private equity sponsors. This setting can accelerate professional growth, but it also requires comfort with ambiguity and frequent change.

Job description

TEAM OVERVIEW

KKR's Global Operations team enables the firm's businesses by supporting the lifecycles of our investments, investors, and funds from one global operating platform. Leveraging a data-driven approach, the team's operating verticals align with our businesses to ensure that we are able to provide best in class service to internal and external stakeholders while using technology, process, and location as tools to adapt and scale. The business area is comprised of the Client Services, Treasury, Private Market Operations, Data Operations, and Global Credit Investment Operations teams.

POSITION SUMMARY

KKR has an enterprise data operations group to collect, manage, and harness the power of data across our diverse business activities. Given the criticality of Portfolio Company (PortCo) data to KKR's Private Markets business, a dedicated Portfolio Company Data Operations function has been established to service our Private Equity and Infrastructure businesses. Structured within the broader Global Data Operations organization, this team is tasked with ensuring all Portfolio Company financials are controlled, consumable, and curated to deliver transparent & impactful insights to key internal & external constituents.

The PortCo Data Operations team is seeking to hire an Associate based in Boston, MA to support Americas Private Equity data management and performance reporting/analysis efforts. The candidate will work closely with Private Equity deal teams, KKR Capstone, and KKR Capital Markets teams to lead the KKR internal portfolio monitoring process and associated technology platform. While driving continuous transformation & improvement, this role will also assist with the execution of the on-going processes of Portfolio Company on-boarding, data quality management, and analytics to meet the evolving needs of both regional & global leadership.

This position will report to the Americas Lead, Portfolio Company Data Operations. The candidate should also have an interest in embracing new technologies (AI), have strong verbal/written communication skills, and be a good cultural fit with an emphasis on collaboration, excellence, and action-oriented results.

KKR has a very collaborative culture where an individual's success is the result of both acumen in the role and ability to leverage the whole firm.  They think in terms of "we", not "I" and know we are better together than one single person. One firm, collaboration, operating with "like and trust" are core to how KKR operates. The person who joins in this role is joining the Portfolio Company Data Operations team but also a team of 2,500 people across the firm and we all work together to support each other in delivering the best of KKR to our companies and clients.

  • Collaborate with the Global Data Operations team, to provide flexible support to all data initiatives and global functions, as necessary.
  • Collaborate with regional team members across offices and time zones in support of these initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS
