What does a Polymer Engineer do?
What are some typical challenges Polymer Engineers face when working on new material development projects?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Polymer Engineer, and why are they important?
What Does a Polymer Engineer Do?
A polymer engineer primarily works in plastics development. In this career, you develop and test plastics or related materials. Your responsibilities include the fabrication of new polymers, working with the prototype, and designing new equipment to process these materials. You also provide support for all plastic injection molding techniques and monitor customer issues, working to resolve them quickly. You analyze and evaluate the success of each new plastic or polymer. You also research and analyze ongoing developments in the plastics field and select polymers for new applications and testing. Other duties include maintaining product improvement policies and promoting efficient lab operations.
What is the difference between Polymer Engineer vs Materials Scientist?
| Aspect | Polymer Engineer | Materials Scientist |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's or Master's in Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science | Bachelor's or Master's in Materials Science, Chemistry, or Physics |
| Work Environment | Research labs, manufacturing facilities, R&D departments | Research labs, academia, industry R&D |
| Industry Usage | Plastic, rubber, polymer product manufacturing | Broad industry applications including metals, ceramics, polymers |
Polymer Engineers focus specifically on the development and manufacturing of polymer materials, while Materials Scientists have a broader scope, studying various materials including metals, ceramics, and polymers. Both roles often collaborate and share similar educational backgrounds, but Polymer Engineers are more specialized in polymer applications and production processes.

Job description
Are you ready to build a career in innovation? The QUIKRETE Companies is looking for a passionate individual to join our team at our state-of-the-art Technology & Innovation Center in Johns Creek, Georgia.
We're hiring for the role of Polymer Chemist/Engineer to support our cutting-edge research and product development efforts. This is a unique opportunity to help shape the future of the construction industry. At QUIKRETE®, we’re leaders in bagged concretes, mortars, and grouts—and we’re making big moves in the CASE market with waterproof membranes, moisture barriers, sealants, and specialty coatings. This role will primarily support our QUIKRETE® and Custom® Building Products product lines.
What You’ll Do
As a pivotal member of our Research and Development team, you will take a hands-on approach to evaluating novel materials and advancing product formulations, driving our mission to accelerate innovation and deliver smarter solutions.
-
Plan, execute, analyze, and report experimental lab work, leading to new products based on reactive chemistries, including epoxies.
-
Contribute to multifunctional teams (including manufacturing, technical service, QA/QC, product management) to ensure successful execution of R&D projects from concept to commercialization, including scale-up.
-
Evaluate prototypes with Technical Services and Customers to validate expected market success of concepts.
-
Assess competitive products and alternative epoxy technologies.
What We’re Looking For
We believe that meaningful impact is driven by a strong technical foundation, relentless curiosity, and a drive to learn. While advanced degrees are welcome, they are not a prerequisite for success in this role.
Education & Experience
-
B.S. degree in Chemistry, Polymer and/or Material Science is required.
-
3-5+ years of industrial formulation of polymer-based coatings, adhesives, sealants and eleastomeric products is a must.
-
Experience in reactive chemistries, such as epoxies, urethanes, phenolics, polyaspartics and/or sil(ox)anes is desired.
-
Demonstrated track record of developing commercially successful products.
-
Experience and basic understanding of manufacturing scale-up processes and construction industry practices is desired.
Expected Competencies
- A talent for solving problems; use logic and reason to identify the strengths and weaknesses of solutions
- Able to work with a diverse group of people in multifunctional teams
- Self-starting with a drive to overachieve
- Excellent written and oral communication
Physical Requirements
- Frequent use of hands and arms for reaching, grasping, and fine motor manipulation.
- Capacity for intermittent standing, walking, turning, sitting, squatting, stooping, and bending
- Ability to safely carry up to 25 lbs., lift/lower up to 50 lbs., and push/pull up to 100 lbs. (with material handling equipment assistance).
- Potential (non-local) travel up to 50%
What You’ll Gain
- Professional Growth: We offer in-depth training, technical certifications, and clear career development paths.
- Supportive Culture: Work with experienced mentors in a friendly, collaborative setting.
- Flexibility & Independence: Manage your workflow with autonomy, backed by a strong support system.
Why Choose QUIKRETE®?
We offer competitive salaries and a full range of benefits:
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance
- Life and personal loss coverage
- Supplemental Life insurance options
- 401(k) plan with generous QUIKRETE® matchÂ
