Job description

Are you interesting in contributing to the protection of California's natural resources? Come join CDFW and help us expand our statewide ecological data network! Under close supervision of the Wildlife Branch Lands Program Manager, the incumbent performs a variety of duties leading the installation, management, and data analysis of climate and biodiversity sensors for the CDFW Climate-Biodiversity Sentinel Site network throughout California. The program aims to assess the potential impacts of climate change on biodiversity and provide data for adaptive management in support of the Department's mission. Duties include collecting field data with climate sensors, camera traps and acoustic recorders; helping to deploy Motus towers (used to track migratory wildlife); process field data using newly developed artificial intelligence tools and online platforms; identifying bird and bat species; mapping habitat features with GoogleEarth and ArcGIS; and compiling information for reports, publications, and presentations.

This position may be eligible for a telework opportunity in accordance with departmental policies and operational needs. Employees are currently required to work in-person at least two (2) days per week. Beginning July 1, 2026, employees will be required to work in-person at least four (4) days per week in alignment with Executive Order N-22-25. Additional in-office days may be required based on operational needs.

Working Conditions
Field duties necessitate short day-long, and frequent long-distance overnight travel and may require rigorous physical work under variable conditions in the field. Office duties involve the ability to use a computer keyboard several hours a day and attending virtual or in person meetings. This may necessitate sitting most of the time and walking or standing for brief periods. A Department-approved uniform is required when working on Department lands.

Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Good analytical, interpersonal, public presentation, communication, and writing skills; adept use of interest-based negotiation; and routine use of computer programs including text processing, spreadsheets, databases, and on-line sourcing of information. Process acoustic recorder data for birds and bats using auto classification software and visual verification techniques and/or ability to identify plants to species. Ability to identify California birds by sight and song. Employ population modeling approaches and organize/synthesize large amounts of varied information. Ability to carry out field work in rugged and hot environments.
A high degree of personal initiative, dependability, professionalism, and integrity is expected. The incumbent is open to feedback on performance; able to adapt to changing challenges; and demonstrates empathy and openness towards other's viewpoints. Willingness to engage in research activities. Ability to lift up to 40 pounds repeatedly throughout the day and hike long distances (up to 2 miles). Ability to carry out wildlife field sampling techniques in hot and rugged environments. Working knowledge of ecology and wildlife and vegetation monitoring techniques, strong analytical skills, and the desire to help build a new statewide program.
Able to work independently and in a team setting; communicate politely, tactfully, and firmly as necessary with members of the public; Have effective listening and negotiation skills and be able to facilitate collaboration in a technical setting and work effectively in a diverse work environment.
