Supervisor: Principal of Elementary School
Professional Growth: The custodian is required to fulfill the annual requirements for professional growth as outlined in the Classified Personnel Handbook, Policy 102.01.
Physical Activity: Fulfillment of the crossing guard position requires walking, standing, bending, twisting, and quick mental and physical reflexes
Qualifications:
  • Education: high school graduate or training equivalent to a high school diploma.
  • Must have an understanding of traffic signals and traffic patterns.
  • Must know and understand basic safety procedures and practices relevant to the job.
  • Must be able to handle emergency situations which might arise.
  • Must possess the ability to use good judgement in the interactions with children and parents.
  • Ability to communicate well with other persons.
  • Must successfully pass a background check.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Job Functions:
  • School Crossing Guards monitor assigned street crossings during the appointed time when children go to school or come home from school.
  • In performing this duty, Crossing Guards record the license plate number of any vehicle found disregarding traffic signs and signals and report violators to the police.
  • Escort children as they cross the street in marked crosswalks.
  • Manually hold traffic stop signs to control the traffic in the designated crosswalk area.
  • Ensure the safety of children as they arrive to or leave from the school crosswalk.
  • Report children with unsafe behavior to school officials.
  • Watch for suspicious individuals in and around school areas and report to school officials and police if necessary.
  • Notify school and police authorities about traffic risks and hazards, including school zones that are not adequately marked and monitored.
  • Using appropriate signs and hand signals, direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic and warn them of existing dangers.
