Overview
The Medical Technologist (MT) works under the direction of the supervisor/manager in the area of responsibility and/or Director of the Laboratory. Performs technical procedures in such areas as Hematology, Chemistry, Serology, Blood Bank, Point of Care Testing, Urinalysis and Microbiology according to established Protocols and standard operating procedures. The Medical Technologist is required to follow all quality control and quality assurance guidelines established in the department to include accurate performance, review and documentation. Perform routine maintenance of departmental equipment and procedures to include inventory control, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting. The position participates in all aspects of Proficiency testing and in maintaining a constant state of readiness in the department to meet all Standards for accreditation from College of American Pathologist (CAP), DNV, State, OSHA, AABB, CLIA, etc. The medical technologist assists in the training of new and existing personnel as well as students. The Medical Technologist performs the responsibilities of lead technologist in the absence of an on site supervisor when designated as such. The medical technologist adheres to hospital and departmental policies and procedures; maintains a professional demeanor and exhibits a positive attitude. May perform specimen collection, specimen processing and phlebotomy as applicable.
What you will do
  • Performs technical procedures in areas such as Hematology, Chemistry, Serology, Blood Bank, Point of Care Testing, Urinalysis and Microbiology. Facilitates positive customer service throughout the department/facility. Responds timely to customer needs.
  • Recognizes, responds and communicates collaboratively with physician regarding variances in laboratory operations and patient data. Builds collaborative professional relationships with a multi-disciplinary team to support patient care needs.
  • Follows all quality control and quality assurance guidelines. Performs routine maintenance of departmental equipment and procedures to include inventory control, preventative maintenance and trouble shooting. Understands the technology systems necessary for efficient department operations and takes responsibility for equipment, instrumentation and technology to maintain and ensure functionality.
  • Completes accurate testing to ensure quality patient care, to include preanalytic, analytic and postanalytic phases.
  • Assists in staff and student training.
  • Complies with laboratory QA/QI program. Performs preventative maintenance, quality controls and troubleshoots on laboratory equipment per standard operating procedures to ensure quality laboratory results. Responsible for ensuring department is maintaining accreditation from College of American Pathologist (CAP), DNV and other accrediting agency standards (as required) within the department. May include validation testing, performance of proficiency samples, preventative maintenance, QC documentation, Temperature Checks, methods comparisons, etc.
  • Complies with RHS policies/procedures/regulatory requirements that support the National Patient Safety Goals and Quality Initiatives. Recognizes and reports variances and provides resolutions. Uses appropriate protective equipment, body mechanics and follows safety guidelines and procedures; identifies and acts to resolve variances or suspected non-compliance to management.

  • Bachelors Degree, Medical Lab Technology/Clinical Lab Science or Related (Required)

Experience
  • 2 years Clinical Lab experience (Preferred)
