Job description

Position Summary

The Laboratory Point of Care Assistant is responsible for assisting/providing refresher training for office staff in performance and reporting of routine Point of Care laboratory tests. Assisting the Point of Care Coordinator and Laboratory Services Manager with duties associated with oversight of Point of Care testing program.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists with assessing competency for POC testing.
  • Assists with site lab assessments.
  • Assists with creating and maintaining procedure manuals for POC testing.
  • Assists with creating and maintaining procedure manuals for Central Laboratory.
  • Assists with creating and maintaining OSHA/Exposure Control manuals.
  • Assists with Rosetta Holding Tank.
  • Assists with maintenance of lab test database in NextGen.
  • Assist with annual Needle Stick Safety evaluations.
  • Assists with OSHA compliance.
  • Assists in maintenance of required documentation to fulfill COLA/CLIA and TPMG requirements.
  • Functions in a multi-disciplinary environment, which requires the application of excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Performs phlebotomy for STAT Imaging orders.
  • Assists in Central Laboratory as Lab Assistant as requested.
  • All other duties as requested by the Manager.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques to perform routine Point of Care laboratory tests with. attention to proper procedure, precision and accuracy.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to operate, clean and sterilize.
  • Knowledge of appropriate medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of and ability to demonstrate quality control concepts.
  • Knowledge of basic word processing and worksheets.
  • Knowledge of electronic health record.
  • Basic knowledge of payers/insurance to facilitate specimen routing and charge entry.
  • Basic knowledge of OSHA.
  • Skill in operating a variety of laboratory instrumentation or test procedures.
  • Skill in specimen collection.
  • Skill in preparing accurate reports concerning the results of laboratory tests and quality control.
  • Skill in communicating clearly with diverse publics.
  • Ability to work scheduled hours as defined in the job offer.
  • Ability to establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
  • Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions and follow written protocols.
  • Ability to work independently.

Education / Training / Requirements

  • High school diploma or college degree in Laboratory Science, or equivalent.
  • Medical Assistant
  • One year experience in a medical laboratory environment (or) physician office laboratory.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to climb or balance for limited periods of time.
