These tools facilitate accurate synchronization between engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain data, ensuring consistency across product lifecycle stages. Familiarity with PLM software and data standards like STEP or XML enhances effective BOM management and synchronization.

What are some typical challenges a PLM BOM Manager faces when coordinating between engineering and manufacturing teams?

A PLM BOM Manager often encounters challenges in ensuring that the Bill of Materials (BOM) accurately reflects design changes and is properly communicated across engineering and manufacturing teams. Misalignment or delays in updates can lead to production errors or rework. The role requires strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage change control processes effectively. Building collaborative relationships and leveraging PLM software to streamline data sharing are key strategies for overcoming these challenges.

What engineering jobs pay $500,000?

Engineering roles such as petroleum engineers, aerospace engineers, and senior software engineers can reach or exceed $500,000 annually, especially with experience, advanced skills, and leadership responsibilities. High-paying positions often require specialized expertise, advanced degrees, and sometimes work in high-demand industries or executive-level roles.

Is there a high demand for project managers?

Project managers, including those in roles like PLM BOM Manager, are in high demand across many industries due to the need for effective project execution and coordination. Strong skills in project management methodologies and tools such as MS Project or Primavera can enhance job prospects, especially in sectors like manufacturing, IT, and engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PLM BOM Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PLM BOM Manager, you need expertise in product lifecycle management (PLM), bill of materials (BOM) structuring, and a relevant technical or engineering degree. Familiarity with PLM software (such as Siemens Teamcenter, PTC Windchill, or SAP PLM), data management tools, and certifications in PLM systems are commonly required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication skills help ensure accurate data and cross-functional collaboration. These skills are critical for maintaining data integrity, optimizing product development, and supporting efficient manufacturing processes.

What is the difference between Plm Bom Manager vs Product Data Coordinator?

AspectPlm Bom ManagerProduct Data Coordinator
Primary RoleOversees product lifecycle data, manages BOMs within PLM systemsMaintains and updates product data, ensures data accuracy across platforms
Required SkillsPLM software expertise, BOM management, product lifecycle knowledgeData entry, database management, attention to detail
Work EnvironmentDesign, engineering, manufacturing settingsProduct development, supply chain, administrative offices
CertificationsPLM system certifications, technical degreesData management certifications, administrative training

The Plm Bom Manager focuses on managing product BOMs within PLM systems, ensuring accurate product data throughout the lifecycle. The Product Data Coordinator handles broader product data maintenance, supporting data accuracy across various platforms. While both roles require attention to detail and data management skills, the Plm Bom Manager has a more specialized focus on BOMs and PLM software.

What is BOM management in PLM?

BOM management in PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) involves creating, maintaining, and controlling the Bill of Materials, which details all components and assemblies required for product manufacturing. A PLM BOM ensures accurate data across engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain processes, often utilizing specialized software tools. Effective BOM management helps improve product quality, reduce errors, and streamline production workflows.

What is a PLM BOM Manager?

A PLM BOM Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the creation, management, and maintenance of Bills of Materials (BOM) within a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system. They ensure that all product components are accurately documented, organized, and updated throughout the product's lifecycle. Their role involves collaborating with engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to streamline product data and improve efficiency. PLM BOM Managers are essential for maintaining product data integrity and enabling effective product development and manufacturing processes.

Job description

PLM Product Manager

Dearborn, MI

W2

Position Description:

Employees in this job function are responsible for development and management of activities for software products, web applications, mobile apps, online platforms and connected devices throughout its lifecycle of planning, definition, production, release, and end of life. They focus on value, viability, design, usability and feasibility and collaborate with business and technology stakeholders to design and shape the vision and future of a product. They serve as central resource, collaborating with design, process, test, quality and marketing teams as the product moves from definition to end of life. Key Responsibilities Key Responsibilities 1. Migration Strategy & Co-existence Roadmap Define and execute the product roadmap for migrating legacy automotive BOM data and processes (e.g., from Teamcenter, Windchill, SAP, or proprietary legacy databases) into 3DEXPERIENCE. Collaborate with enterprise architects to design and manage "co-existence" strategies (dual-running of legacy and 3DX systems) to ensure zero disruption to ongoing vehicle programs. Establish decommissioning criteria for legacy BOM applications as capabilities are successfully transitioned to 3DX. 2. Automotive BOM Solutioning & Configuration Management Own the product vision for how vehicle structures, options, variants, and marketing rules are authored, managed, and validated within 3DX. Design and implement robust processes for managing the 150% Over-Complete BOM and generating precise 100% Configured BOMs for downstream procurement and manufacturing. Define the integration points and data-flow standards between CAD (3D design), EBOM (Engineering BOM), MBOM (Manufacturing BOM), and downstream ERP systems (e.g., SAP). Drive the standardization of Engineering Change Management (ECR/ECO) and effectivity (date, unit, serial, and milestone-based) within the 3DX environment. 3. Data Migration & Quality Governance Partner closely with Data Migration and IT teams to define data mapping, transformation rules, and data cleansing strategies from legacy schemas to the 3DX unified data model. Establish data quality metrics and validation frameworks to ensure migrated BOM structures are complete, accurate, and fully functional in the new platform. 4. Agile Product Delivery & Stakeholder Management Manage, prioritize, and refine the product backlog (Epics, User Stories) in Jira, balancing technical migration debt with new feature enablement. Act as the primary liaison between global vehicle program teams, engineering attributes leads, purchasing, manufacturing, and the PLM implementation team. Advocate for "Out-of-the-Box" (OOTB) 3DEXPERIENCE capabilities to minimize customization, ensuring long-term platform supportability and upgrade paths. 5. Business Readiness & Change Management Lead the cultural and process shift required to move global engineering teams from legacy BOM-authoring mindsets to a modern, data-driven 3DX paradigm. Partner with Change Management teams to develop comprehensive training plans, user guides, and hyper-care support models for phased rollouts.
