Job description

Consider joining the Pennex family as a PLC Support Technician at our Leetonia, OH location.  The PLC Support Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving production and facility equipment with a focus on electrical systems, PLCs, and automation controls. This position provides hands-on support to minimize downtime, enhance system reliability, and support continuous improvement across plant operations.

This role bridges the gap between maintenance technicians and controls engineers, providing advanced electrical and PLC troubleshooting support while remaining actively engaged in hands-on maintenance activities.

This is a night shift position, Sunday through Thursday 10pm to 6am.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Responds to service calls involving equipment breakdowns, providing advanced troubleshooting for electrical and PLC-related issues.
  • Diagnoses and repairs PLC hardware and software faults (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar).
  • Troubleshoots and maintains variable frequency drives (VFDs), HMI systems, sensors, servo drives, and industrial networking.
  • Collaborates with maintenance team members and engineering to identify root causes and implement long-term solutions.
  • Assists with installation, calibration, and modification of production and facility equipment.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and controls systems per PM schedule.
  • Supports controls-related projects, system upgrades, and improvements.
  • Maintains and updates documentation: wiring diagrams, PLC programs, schematics, and related materials.
  • Participates in training maintenance staff on electrical and PLC troubleshooting.
  • Ensures compliance with all safety standards, company policies, and procedures.
  • Completes and closes work orders accurately and promptly in the CMMS system.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Education 

  • Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school in Electrical, Electronics, Automation ro related.  

Experience 

  • Five or more years of industrial maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Three or more years of hands-on PLC troubleshooting, programming, or modification experience (Allen-Bradley preferred).
  • Experience with VFDs, HMIs, and instrumentation systems.
  • Experience in extrusion, casting, or metal manufacturing is preferred.

Other Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities      

  • Strong understanding of industrial electrical systems (120V–480V, 3-phase).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical blueprints, ladder logic, and schematic diagrams.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude; familiarity with hydraulics, pneumatics, and mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, multimeters, and calibration instruments.
  • Ability to lead troubleshooting efforts and train others in PLC/electrical fundamentals.
  • Basic programming knowledge in Allen-Bradley RSLogix/Studio 5000 or equivalent software.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Self-directed, detail-oriented, and safety-conscious.
  • Ability to read maintenance blueprints, hydraulic schematics, ladder diagrams and bill of materials.
  • Regular attendance is required.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment physical and drug screen.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States, visa sponsorships are not available.
