Job description

About the role:
We are seeking a skilled and motivated PLC Field Technician with strong hands-on experience in PLC-based control systems, industrial networking, and field commissioning. This role is responsible for performing installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and startup of PLC systems across industrial automation and building management system (BMS) environments.
The PLC Field Technician plays a critical role in executing fieldwork, supporting commissioning activities, documenting technical changes, and ensuring all systems are installed according to engineering specifications. This position requires solid technical ability, strong communication skills, and the capacity to manage multiple priorities in fast-paced construction and industrial settings.
Key Responsibilities:
PLC Installation, Configuration & Commissioning
  • Perform field installation, wiring verification, loop checks, and commissioning of PLC systems for industrial automation and BMS applications.
  • Troubleshoot PLC programs, field devices, and communication issues to ensure proper operation and integration with SCADA/HMI platforms (e.g., Ignition).
  • Execute startup plans in coordination with engineers and project managers, ensuring systems are installed and configured per design specifications.
  • Support Senior and Lead PLC Technicians during commissioning and assist in resolving technical issues during startup.

Industrial Networking & Protocols
  • Configure and troubleshoot industrial communication protocols including Modbus/UDP, Modbus/IP, Ethernet/IP, BACnet, and OPC UA.
  • Set and validate IP addresses, subnet masks, gateways, VLAN assignments, and port schedules.
  • Work with industrial network architectures such as linear networks, star topologies, and device-level rings.

Documentation & Project Coordination
  • Develop accurate as-built documentation, redlines, and commissioning checklists.
  • Communicate technical changes and field findings to Senior and Lead PLC Technicians and PLC Engineers.
  • Manage materials, timelines, and task priorities across multiple active job sites.
  • Collaborate with engineers and project managers to ensure alignment of technical deliverables and project requirements.

Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of hands on experience with PLC systems in industrial or construction environments.
  • Proficiency with Allen Bradley PLC platforms; preferred exposure to Siemens or Schneider Electric systems.
  • Working knowledge of Studio 5000, FactoryTalk Linx, RS Linx Classic, RSNetWorx, and FactoryTalk Activation Manager.
  • Experience with SCADA/HMI systems and industrial networking fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols: Modbus/IP, Modbus/UDP, Ethernet/IP, MQTT, OPC UA, BACnet.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, network diagrams, and mechanical plans.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem solving skills.
  • OSHA 10 certification obtained within the past two (2) years is required.
    • If certification is not current or has not been completed, OSHA 10 training will be provided and must be successfully completed within the first week of employment.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites (up to 95%).

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to travel frequently to job sites by car or plane, up to 95%
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout job sites for extended periods
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and lifts as required
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, and work in tight or confined spaces
  • Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver equipment and materials up to 50 pounds
  • Manual dexterity to handle tools, wiring, and small components
  • Ability to work at heights and in varying indoor and outdoor conditions
  • Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment when required (hard hate, vest, safety glasses, gloves, and safety-toed boots)
  • Visual keenness to read schematics, labels, and digital displays
  • Ability to visually identify and differentiate wires by assigned color
  • Ability to hear and respond to alarms, equipment sounds, and verbal instructions
  • Capability to safely operate hand and power tools
