How much do plc design engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 2, 2026, the average yearly pay for plc design engineer in the United States is $97,747.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $80,000.00 and $119,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are PLC Design Engineers?

PLC Design Engineers are professionals who specialize in designing, programming, and implementing Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) for industrial automation systems. They create control systems that automate machinery and processes in industries like manufacturing, automotive, and energy. Their responsibilities include developing electrical schematics, writing PLC code, troubleshooting systems, and ensuring that automation solutions meet safety and efficiency standards. PLC Design Engineers work closely with other engineers, technicians, and clients to deliver reliable and optimized automation solutions.

What is the highest salary for a PLC engineer?

The highest salary for a PLC Design Engineer can exceed $100,000 annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced certifications, and working in high-demand industries or regions. Senior engineers with specialized skills in automation and control systems tend to earn the top salaries in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PLC Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PLC Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, automation, and control systems, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with PLC programming languages (such as Ladder Logic or Structured Text), SCADA systems, and certifications like Siemens or Rockwell Automation are highly valued. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and resolve issues efficiently. These competencies ensure the reliable design, implementation, and optimization of automated control systems in industrial environments.

What's the typical PLC engineer salary?

The average salary for a PLC Design Engineer typically ranges from $60,000 to $100,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced engineers with specialized skills in ladder logic and automation tools can earn higher salaries.

Is PLC still in demand?

PLC Design Engineers are in continued demand as automation and industrial control systems expand across manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure sectors. Skills in ladder logic programming, SCADA systems, and familiarity with PLC brands like Siemens and Allen-Bradley enhance job prospects in this field.

What are some typical challenges faced by PLC Design Engineers when integrating new automation systems into existing production lines?

PLC Design Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new automation systems with legacy equipment, as older machinery may lack compatibility with modern PLCs and communication protocols. Ensuring minimal production downtime during installation and troubleshooting unforeseen issues with wiring or software logic are also common hurdles. Close collaboration with maintenance teams, machine operators, and sometimes vendors is necessary to achieve seamless integration and system reliability. Effective planning, thorough documentation, and clear communication are key to overcoming these challenges in a production environment.

What is the difference between Plc Design Engineer vs Automation Engineer?

AspectPlc Design EngineerAutomation Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in electrical, electronics, or control engineering; PLC certifications are commonRequires a degree in electrical, mechanical, or control engineering; often holds certifications in automation systems
Work EnvironmentDesigning PLC systems for manufacturing, industrial, or process control environmentsDeveloping and implementing automation solutions across various industries
Industry UsagePrimarily in manufacturing, process industries, and industrial automationBroader application including manufacturing, robotics, and systems integration

While both roles involve control systems, a Plc Design Engineer focuses specifically on designing and programming PLC systems, whereas an Automation Engineer has a broader scope, including integrating various automation technologies. The Plc Design Engineer is more specialized in PLC hardware and software design, making it ideal for those interested in control system development.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

While most engineering roles do not reach a $500,000 annual salary, some highly specialized or executive-level engineers, such as senior automation or systems engineers with extensive experience and advanced skills, can earn this level of compensation, often through bonuses, stock options, or profit sharing. Typically, these roles require advanced certifications, leadership responsibilities, and work in industries like aerospace, oil and gas, or high-tech manufacturing.
