What are Platform Services?

Platform Services refer to the foundational set of tools, frameworks, and infrastructure that enable developers and organizations to build, deploy, and manage applications efficiently. These services often include cloud computing resources, databases, authentication systems, monitoring tools, and APIs that support scalable and reliable application development. Platform Services are typically offered as part of cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, and they help reduce the complexity of managing hardware and software infrastructure, allowing teams to focus on innovation and user experience.

How does a Platform Services professional typically collaborate with development and operations teams?

Platform Services professionals play a crucial role in bridging the gap between development and operations teams. They work closely with developers to ensure that applications are optimized for the underlying platforms and collaborate with operations teams to automate deployments, monitor system health, and address performance issues. This cross-functional collaboration often involves participating in daily stand-ups, incident response, and architecture planning meetings. By fostering strong communication channels, Platform Services professionals help enable faster releases, improved reliability, and a more scalable infrastructure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Platform Services, and why are they important?

To thrive in Platform Services, you need a solid background in systems administration, cloud infrastructure, and automation, usually backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as AWS, Azure, Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines, along with certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate across teams are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure reliable platform performance, efficient deployment processes, and seamless support for business-critical applications.

Job description

Sentinel Blue is looking for a Platform Engineer to join our Platforms Team. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys building scalable, reliable, and secure technical platforms that enable teams to deliver services efficiently and consistently. Our ideal candidate is a strong systems thinker who can design and automate infrastructure, reduce operational friction, and embed security and compliance into platform capabilities. This role will support our internal teams by developing and maintaining shared infrastructure, automation, and tooling that underpin service delivery.
This is a full-time position that is fully remote.
This position may require access to technology, technical data, or information that is subject to U.S. export control laws and regulations. Employment in this position is contingent upon either verification of U.S. person status as defined under applicable export control regulations (which includes U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and certain protected individuals such as refugees and asylees) or the ability to obtain any required export authorization. The company reserves the right not to apply for an export license and to decline to proceed with any applicant on that basis. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to citizenship status, national origin, or immigration status.
A day in the Platform Engineer role:
The Platform Engineer may design and build cloud foundations, develop infrastructure-as-code templates, improve CICD pipelines, and automate system provisioning and configuration. They will focus on creating reliable, reusable platform components that support secure application deployment, system operations, and compliance requirements.
The Platform Engineer will work closely with Operations teams to ensure platform services are resilient, observable, and aligned with frameworks such as CMMC and NIST 800-171. They will participate in design discussions, contribute to technical standards, and continuously improve platform reliability and developer experience. The role provides opportunities to work with modern cloud tooling, automation frameworks, and observability stacks, while growing into senior technical or architectural leadership roles.
Responsibilities:
  • Design, build, and maintain shared platform services that support secure and scalable infrastructure across client and internal environments.
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure-as-code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform, ARM/Bicep, or similar frameworks.
  • Build automation for system provisioning, configuration management, patching, and lifecycle operations.
  • Support and improve CICD pipelines, deployment workflows, and platform integrations.
  • Implement platform-level security controls, including identity integration, logging, monitoring, encryption, and segmentation.
  • Collaborate with Security Operations and Compliance teams to embed compliance and audit-readiness into platform designs.
  • Monitor platform health and reliability, supporting incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Communicate platform designs, changes, and operational guidance clearly to internal teams and clients.
  • Contribute to platform documentation, standards, runbooks, and architectural diagrams.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce manual effort, improve consistency, and enhance developer and operator experience through automation.

What We Can Offer: Sentinel Blue is a young company with a focused mission: We're bringing enterprise-class cybersecurity to small and medium sized businesses. Frankly, we're pushing the envelope of how things are done and constantly seeking innovative ways to meet that mission. The pace is fast, and we're always learning new things. This is a great place if you want to expose yourself to new and emerging technologies, want to be challenged, and want to build your skills. Further, success in this role can quickly transition into senior engineering, platform leadership, or architectural roles. The right person will find themselves in a fun, dynamic environment, working on interesting problems and making a real difference.
You will be required to achieve a Security+ certification in the first 2 months of hire; we'll cover your certification costs and provide paid time for you to study!
Requirements:
  • 2+ years of experience in platform engineering, infrastructure engineering, DevOps, systems engineering, or related technical roles.
Hands-on experience building and operating cloud infrastructure in Azure.
  • Practical experience with infrastructure-as-code, automation, configuration management, and change control systems.
  • Strong understanding of system security concepts such as IAM, least privilege, logging and monitoring, encryption, network segmentation, and backup/recovery.
  • Experience supporting platforms or systems aligned with security or compliance frameworks such as CMMC or NIST 800-171.
Proficiency with at least one scripting or programming language.
  • Demonstrated ability to design reliable systems, troubleshoot complex issues, and implement scalable solutions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain platform concepts to non-platform stakeholders.
  • CompTIA Security+ certification is required in the first 6 months of hire.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience working in a multi-tenant or managed services environment.
  • Familiarity with Azure Government and Office 365 GCC High environments.
  • Experience with CICD platforms, containerization, or orchestration technologies.
  • Exposure to observability tools such as logging platforms, metrics, and alerting systems.
  • Working knowledge of a security and compliance framework such as NIST 800-53, FedRAMP, NIST 800-171, CMMC, CIS Controls, ISO 27001, or SOC 2.
  • Experience designing platforms that support self-service workflows and reduce operational toil.
  • Strong interest in cloud-first and automation-driven architecture.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Cybersecurity, or equivalent work experience.

Benefits:
  • Fully paid individual healthcare, vision and dental insurance for the employee.
  • Paid certification and training opportunities.
  • Three weeks of paid vacation + 10 paid holidays.
  • A supportive environment with a focus on keeping healthy work-life balance.
  • Retirement benefit (401k) with company match.
