The Assistant Vice President (AVP), Product & UW Value Stream Lead, Personal Insurance sets the strategy, roadmap, and execution agenda for a large-scale $10M-$15M Product & Underwriting invest portfolio. The role advances capabilities across coverage, appetite, pricing segmentation, underwriting, third-party data, rating, and product management, connecting Prevail and legacy delivery, underwriting modernization, product expansion, and analytical rating enablement to measurable business outcomes.
This leader translates Personal Insurance priorities into a unified, multi-year roadmap that balances growth, profitability, regulatory requirements, platform health, cost, and operational performance. The role manages a significant investment portfolio and ensures delivery is tied to clear, measurable outcomes.
The AVP inspires a team of fifteen and operates with broad oversight, leads product managers, product owners, and delivery leaders, and partners with Product, Underwriting, Actuarial, Data & Analytics, Technology, Compliance, and Personal Insurance leadership to strengthen price-to-risk, product access, underwriting outcomes, data quality, speed to market, and profitable growth.
Primary Job Responsibilities
  • Own the strategy, roadmap, and execution of the Product & UW value stream, translating Personal Insurance priorities into an integrated portfolio plan across product, underwriting, actuarial, data, technology, operations, and channel partners. Resolves competing priorities and sequence investments to maximize business value, pricing competitiveness, underwriting quality, and customer impact.
  • Lead a large-scale portfolio of Product & UW initiatives and enabling platforms, with accountability for investment planning, prioritization, business case development, and benefit realization. Ensure delivery improves price-to-risk, product and coverage access, underwriting precision, data quality, cost to serve, and regulatory compliance.
  • Guide delivery across multiple Agile teams and programs by setting clear priorities, managing cross-team dependencies, and strengthening planning, backlog management, release readiness, transparency, and execution discipline.
  • Oversee capabilities that support how Personal Insurance designs, prices, underwrites, launches, and manages products, including rate and rule changes, class plan modernization, coverage enhancements, underwriting decisioning, third-party data, analytical rating, legacy book consolidation, and product maintenance. Ensure capabilities are accurate, compliant, scalable, and aligned to business strategy, customer needs, and regulatory expectations.
  • Partner with senior leaders across Product, Underwriting, Actuarial, Data & Analytics, Technology, Operations, Finance, Compliance, Agent Experience, Customer Experience, and Innovation to align Product & UW delivery with business outcomes and translate complex decisions into clear tradeoffs and executive actions.
  • Provide governance and oversight across the value stream, ensuring appropriate risk management, controls, and alignment with legal, privacy, security, and regulatory expectations. Maintain transparency with senior leadership on progress, risks, dependencies, and portfolio performance.
  • Lead, develop, and scale a high-performing team of Product & UW product management and delivery leaders. Build leadership capability, deepen product, underwriting, and data acumen, strengthen talent pipelines, and reinforce an operating model grounded in accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement by driving AI adoption and applying emerging technologies, advanced analytics, third-party data, and new ways of working to improve competitiveness, precision, efficiency, and speed while maintaining disciplined execution and risk awareness.

Skills
  • Demonstrated experience leading large scale product, underwriting, data, or platform portfolios in a complex, matrixed enterprise environment
  • Strong ability to translate strategy into execution and drive alignment across business, technology, and operations
  • Deep experience in product management, underwriting capabilities, rating or pricing enablement, and delivery of business and data capabilities at scale
  • Strong understanding of Agile delivery models and experience improving execution maturity across multiple teams
  • Ability to influence senior leaders and communicate complex product, underwriting, data, technical, and investment decisions in clear business terms
  • Proven ability to lead leaders, build high performing teams, and develop talent
  • Strong business, financial, product, underwriting, data, and technology acumen, with ability to balance growth, profitability, customer outcomes, cost, risk, and speed
  • Familiarity with Personal Insurance product and underwriting capabilities such as pricing segmentation, rate and rule changes, class plan modernization, third-party data, analytical rating, underwriting decisioning, product maintenance, and legacy modernization

Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses
  • 12+ years of relevant experience in product management, underwriting, data and analytics, technology, or business transformation
  • 7+ years leading leaders, large portfolios, or complex programs across multiple teams or functions
  • Experience operating in a regulated industry preferred, including insurance, financial services, or similar environments
  • Experience delivering product, underwriting, rating, or data capabilities at scale, preferably within Personal Insurance or property and casualty insurance
  • Experience with Agile delivery methods such as Scrum or Kanban; scaled Agile experience preferred
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience

This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work schedule. Candidates who live near one of our office locations have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$160,000 - $240,000
