What is plant engineering?

Plant engineering is a field focused on the design, operation, maintenance, and optimization of industrial facilities and equipment. Plant engineers ensure that manufacturing plants and other industrial sites run efficiently, safely, and cost-effectively. Their responsibilities often include overseeing equipment installation, troubleshooting problems, improving processes, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations. Plant engineers play a crucial role in maximizing productivity and minimizing downtime in various industries such as manufacturing, energy, and processing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a plant engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Plant Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or electrical engineering, problem-solving abilities, and typically a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with CAD software, maintenance management systems, and knowledge of safety and regulatory standards are commonly required. Strong project management, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help Plant Engineers collaborate and lead teams efficiently. These competencies ensure safe, efficient plant operations and continuous process improvements.

What are some common challenges faced by plant engineers, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Plant engineers often encounter challenges such as equipment downtime, process inefficiencies, and compliance with safety regulations. Addressing these issues typically involves proactive maintenance planning, effective problem-solving, and collaboration with operations and maintenance teams. Staying updated with industry best practices and regularly communicating with cross-functional departments can help plant engineers implement long-term solutions and improve overall plant performance.

What is the difference between Plant Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectPlant EngineeringMechanical Engineering
CertificationsPE (Professional Engineer), OSHA safety trainingPE, EIT, OSHA safety training
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, manufacturing facilitiesDesign offices, manufacturing, R&D labs
Industry UsageHeavy industry, utilities, manufacturing plantsAutomotive, aerospace, energy, product design

Plant Engineering focuses on maintaining and improving industrial plant operations, including equipment, safety, and efficiency. Mechanical Engineering covers the design, analysis, and manufacturing of mechanical systems across various industries. While both roles require similar certifications and often work in industrial settings, Plant Engineers are more involved in operational aspects, whereas Mechanical Engineers focus on design and development.

What does a plant engineer do?

A plant engineer is responsible for maintaining, designing, and improving manufacturing or industrial plant operations. Job description

Description

Plant Engineer

Phoenix, Arizona | PAC by ProAmpac

Engineer Better. Build Smarter. Make an Impact.

If you’re an engineer who would rather be on the plant floor solving problems, improving equipment, and seeing the impact of your work than sitting behind a desk all day, this may be the opportunity for you.

PAC by ProAmpac is looking for a Plant Engineer to join our manufacturing operation in Phoenix, Arizona. In this role, you’ll work directly with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Process Engineering, and Operational Excellence to increase productivity, improve manufacturing processes, reduce costs, and support the successful implementation of capital equipment and other engineering initiatives.

This is a hands-on plant engineering role for someone who enjoys understanding how things work, finding the root cause when they don’t, and developing practical solutions that make manufacturing safer, more reliable, and more efficient.

What You’ll Do

As our Plant Engineer, you’ll serve as a key engineering resource for the Phoenix manufacturing site. You will:

  • Take ownership of site preparation and readiness for new capital equipment and capital deployments.

  • Partner with Project Engineering, Operations, and Process Engineering to support equipment installation, commissioning, startup, and transition to steady-state production.

  • Support site-level capital and expense projects, helping keep initiatives on schedule and aligned with budget expectations.

  • Troubleshoot mechanical and manufacturing process issues using data, root-cause analysis, and a structured problem-solving approach.

  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve productivity, manufacturing flow, equipment performance, and overall process efficiency.

  • Partner with Operational Excellence teams on continuous improvement and cost-reduction initiatives.

  • Work closely with Maintenance to support equipment installation, troubleshooting, debugging, and reliability improvements.

  • Collaborate with internal and external technical resources to develop and implement effective engineering solutions.

  • Provide feedback and recommendations that help standardize future manufacturing equipment, hardware, software, controls, and programming across operations.

  • Partner with Packaging Engineering on R&D initiatives, product trials, and projects supporting customer and business growth.

  • Serve as an engineering liaison between Phoenix operations and the broader Engineering organization.

  • Develop reports, technical documentation, presentations, procedures, and training materials as needed.

  • Help ensure engineering improvements are implemented with safety, quality, productivity, and long-term reliability in mind.

What You Bring

We’re looking for an engineer who combines technical capability with curiosity, ownership, and strong problem-solving skills.

Required qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.

  • 5+ years of progressively responsible technical or engineering experience within a manufacturing environment.

  • Experience supporting manufacturing equipment, processes, capital projects, or plant engineering initiatives.

  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot equipment and process issues and identify root causes.

  • Experience coordinating projects and working across Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance teams.

  • AutoCAD experience.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, procedures, specifications, and other engineering documentation.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet applicable company driving requirements.

  • Ability to travel to other company, customer, or industry locations when business needs require it. Some domestic and international travel may be necessary.

Even better if you have:
  • Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other Continuous Improvement experience.

  • Experience improving manufacturing productivity, equipment effectiveness, throughput, or cost performance.

  • Knowledge of electrical controls systems.

  • Solid Edge experience.

  • Experience with equipment installation, startup, commissioning, or capital deployment.

The Engineer Who Will Thrive Here

You may be a strong fit if you:

  • See a recurring manufacturing problem and immediately want to understand why it is happening.

  • Are equally comfortable reviewing data, working through a technical drawing, and standing beside equipment with Operations or Maintenance.

  • Can move from identifying a problem to developing and implementing a practical solution.

  • Understand that the best engineering solution has to work in the real manufacturing environment, not just on paper.

  • Enjoy collaborating across functions rather than operating in an engineering silo.

  • Think about cost, quality, safety, reliability, and productivity together.

  • Take ownership and follow projects through implementation, not simply recommendation.

Your Work Environment

This is a plant-based engineering position. You’ll work across office, manufacturing, and warehouse environments and will regularly spend time within the operation supporting projects, troubleshooting, process improvements, and equipment initiatives.

The position requires standing and walking throughout manufacturing environments and may periodically require lifting or moving materials or equipment components up to 50 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Make Manufacturing Better

At ProAmpac, engineering isn’t removed from the operation. It helps shape it.

This role gives you the opportunity to influence how equipment is installed, how processes perform, how problems are solved, and how improvements become part of the way we operate.

If you’re ready to bring your manufacturing engineering experience to a role where you can solve problems, improve performance, and see the results of your work firsthand, we’d like to hear from you.

Apply today and help us engineer what’s next at PAC by ProAmpac.
