What are Planogram Managers?

Planogram Managers are professionals responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining product placement strategies in retail stores. They create visual diagrams, known as planograms, that dictate where and how products should be displayed on shelves to maximize sales and enhance customer experience. Their role involves analyzing sales data, collaborating with merchandising teams, and ensuring that store layouts meet company standards. Planogram Managers also monitor compliance and make adjustments based on inventory changes or promotional activities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Planogram Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Planogram Manager, you need expertise in visual merchandising, retail analytics, and space planning, often supported by a degree in business, marketing, or a related field. Familiarity with planogram software (such as JDA Space Planning, Nielsen Spaceman, or Apollo) and proficiency in Excel or data visualization tools is typically required. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and ensuring consistent execution. These skills are essential for optimizing product placement, maximizing sales, and maintaining brand standards across retail environments.

How does a Planogram Manager typically collaborate with merchandising and sales teams to optimize product placement?

A Planogram Manager works closely with merchandising and sales teams to ensure that product displays align with both company strategies and consumer shopping behaviors. They frequently gather input from these teams regarding sales trends, promotional plans, and inventory considerations to create effective shelf layouts. Regular meetings and cross-functional communication are essential, as Planogram Managers must adjust layouts based on feedback and changing business priorities. This collaborative approach helps maximize sales opportunities and ensures a cohesive in-store experience.

What is the difference between Planogram Manager vs Merchandising Coordinator?

-
At Hy-Vee our people are our strength. We promise "a helpful smile in every aisle" and those smiles can only come from a workforce that is fully engaged and committed to supporting our customers and each other.
Job Description:
Job Title: Product Manager
Department: Information Technology
FLSA: Exempt
About the role
We are looking for a Product Manager to own the software products that power Hy-Vee's merchandising capabilities, from how items are set and merchandised in our stores to how promotions are priced, configured, and executed across our retail environment.
This is a highly cross-functional role that sits at the intersection of merchandising operations, category management, and technology delivery. You serve as the primary bridge between internal merchandising and operations stakeholders and the technology teams and vendors that support them. You'll manage a portfolio spanning multiple commercial platforms and internally developed software, requiring both strategic product thinking and strong vendor management.
What you'll own
Merchandising Product Strategy
  • The product roadmap for Hy-Vee's merchandising software portfolio, including item setup, lifecycle management, assortment management, and product location, with clear prioritization aligned to business outcomes.
  • The execution of merchandising master data and item management workflows, understanding how data flows from item setup through to scannable product at the shelf.
  • Merchandise and space planning capabilities, planogram development, shelf space optimization, and the software tools that support them.

Promotional & Pricing Execution
  • The product roadmap for promotional pricing, offer configuration, and execution workflows, including SAP PMR and related systems.
  • Assortment management and floor planning software, ensuring these capabilities are configured, maintained, and aligned to category and space strategy.
  • Product location software governing the actual placement of product within the store.

Vendor & Stakeholder Relationships
  • The relationship with internal stakeholders in merchandising, category management, marketing, and store operations.
  • The relationship with platform vendors including SAP and Blue Yonder, focused on roadmap alignment, scope and prioritization of enhancements, and escalation.
  • Ongoing partnerships with internally developed software teams to manage and evolve custom applications within your portfolio.

What you'll do
  • Author, maintain, and evangelize the multi-year merchandising software roadmap; present it to executive leadership, internal stakeholders, and during vendor alignment.
  • Translate complex merchandising business processes into clear software requirements for engineering and vendor teams.
  • Drive configuration, enhancement, and release cycles across SAP S/4HANA Retail, SAP PMR, and Blue Yonder platforms.
  • Partner with category management, marketing, and store operations teams to ensure platform decisions reflect actual business workflows.
  • Manage ongoing vendor relationships with SAP and Blue Yonder by aligning roadmaps, prioritizing enhancements, and escalating issues.
  • Support assortment and space planning processes, working with Blue Yonder and internal stakeholders to maintain planogram and floor planning workflows.
  • Manage a hybrid portfolio of commercial platforms and internally developed software, balancing competing priorities across multiple capability domains.

What we're looking for
Required
  • Proven product management experience supporting merchandising, category management, or space planning functions in a retail environment.
  • Deep understanding of merchandising business processes such as item setup, product data management, assortment, promotion configuration and how they translate to software requirements.
  • Hands-on experience with SAP S/4HANA Retail (merchandising and/or master data functions) and SAP PMR (Promotion Management for Retail).
  • Familiarity with Blue Yonder Assortment & Space Planning and/or Floor Planning tools.
  • Ability to manage a broad portfolio of products across multiple capability domains simultaneously.
  • Strong vendor management skills.
  • Comfort navigating a hybrid portfolio of commercial platforms and internally developed software.
  • Technical depth sufficient to partner credibly with engineering and vendors.
  • Retail or grocery industry background is REQUIRED.
