Job description

Full Professor Africana Studies

The Africana Studies Department at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for tenured faculty appointment at the rank of Full Professor and will begin in January 2027, pending budgetary approval.

In filling this chair position, the Department seeks candidates with extraordinary credentials in research, teaching, and mentorship. We are especially keen to attract a scholar whose research and teaching engage with civically engaged, participatory, and/or public scholarship in Africana Studies and social change. We welcome scholars engaged in these approaches in local, regional, global, or comparative contexts. Ideal applicants should have a Ph.D. in Africana Studies, African American Studies, or a related discipline, a significant record of publications, a record of attracting research funding and/or prestigious fellowships and demonstrated excellence in leadership.

Africana Studies is a vibrant department in the Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences, with particular strengths in African diaspora studies, cultural studies, health equity, urban history, and social justice. The Department is a part of Pitt's Racial Justice and Health Equity Research and Education Collaborative through which it has synergies the Center for Ethnic Studies Research, the Center for African Studies, the Center on Race and Social Problems, the Center for Civil Rights and Racial Justice, the Center for Health Equity, and the Center for Urban Education. 

Our undergraduate and doctoral programs reflect the department's commitment to rigorous training and engaged scholarship. The PhD program organizes its graduate education around three thematic emphases: Race & Equity, Migration & Community Transformation, and Culture & Creative Production. Students work closely with faculty mentors and benefit from extensive interdisciplinary course offerings across the university.

Africana Studies is physically located on a portion of the famous Forbes Field, the home of the Homestead Grays, and next to the Hillman Library, which houses to the August Wilson Archive, among other important archival material on black history in the Pittsburgh region.
