What is a physician executive?

A Physician Executive is a medical doctor who also holds a leadership or administrative role within a healthcare organization. They are responsible for overseeing clinical operations, developing healthcare policies, and ensuring quality patient care while balancing organizational objectives. Physician Executives often bridge the gap between clinical staff and hospital administration, using their medical expertise to inform strategic decisions. Their roles may include Chief Medical Officer, Medical Director, or similar positions focused on improving healthcare delivery and organizational performance.

What does a physician executive do?

Qualifications of a physician executive begin with those necessary for a doctor. They include a bachelor’s degree and four years in medical school. You then need to undergo additional education in a specialty and spend several years in residency. Certification by an organization like the American Association for Physician Leadership can hone the leadership and management skills necessary to improve the quality of care at a health care facility. Several years of practice in medicine gives you the essential insights and experience to recruit other professionals and manage a facility in a fiscally responsible way.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a physician executive, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Physician Executive, you need a medical degree (MD or DO), board certification, and significant experience in clinical practice and healthcare management. Familiarity with healthcare analytics, electronic health record (EHR) systems, and certifications like Certified Physician Executive (CPE) are often required. Outstanding leadership, strategic thinking, and communication skills help drive collaboration and organizational change. These competencies are critical for aligning clinical care with business goals, ensuring quality, and leading healthcare organizations effectively.

How does a physician executive typically balance clinical responsibilities with administrative leadership duties?

Physician Executives often split their time between patient care and high-level administrative tasks, such as strategic planning, policy development, and leading interdisciplinary teams. This balance can vary by organization, but most Physician Executives gradually shift toward more administrative responsibilities as they advance. Effective time management and delegation are essential to ensure both patient care and organizational objectives are met. • Support payor partnerships and serve as the primary point of contact for payor CMOs and medical leadership in support of strategic alignment activities
  • Maintain an active clinical practice (0.7 FTE) while fulfilling administrative leadership responsibilities (0.3 FTE) - flexibly may be available upon discussion

Chair & Strategy Leader Responsibilities:

  • Engage the CCAP Board and CCAP Network Management in developing the mission and vision of the network, balancing the needs and interests of network members with the realities of the market
  • Ensure strategies, tactics and monitoring activities are in place to realize the network’s mission and vision
  • Align board engagements with achieving stated objectives. Strive to engage all board members in discussions and decision-making processes as outlined in the Operating Agreement and challenge board members to address all sides of an issue
  • Assist management in the preparation of the board meeting agenda to ensure strategic and operational needs of the network are adequately addressed
  • Provide insight to board subcommittees and attend committee meetings, as appropriate

  • Striving for excellence
  • Being flexible and embracing innovations
  • Meeting customer needs
  • Developing teams

  • Encouraging curiosity and learning
  • Fostering diversity in the workforce
  • Leading the organization through change

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Medical degree (MD or DO) with an active, unrestricted license
  • Board certification in a clinical specialty
  • Significant experience (5+ years) practicing medicine, with credibility among physicians and clinical leaders
  • Demonstrated leadership experience within a clinically integrated network, ACO, health system or value-based care environment
  • Deep understanding of population health, clinical integration and value-based care models
  • Proven ability to lead or chair boards, committees or governance bodies
