How much do photogrammetry engineer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 7, 2026, the average hourly pay for photogrammetry engineer in the United States is $47.09, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $35.82 and $60.82 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are Photogrammetry Engineers?

Photogrammetry Engineers are professionals who use photography, satellite imagery, and other sensor data to create precise maps, 3D models, and measurements of physical environments. They specialize in extracting accurate spatial information from images and often work in fields such as surveying, cartography, remote sensing, and geographic information systems (GIS). Their work supports industries like construction, urban planning, environmental monitoring, and even virtual reality by providing detailed geospatial data and models.

What are some common challenges faced by Photogrammetry Engineers when working with large-scale mapping projects?

Photogrammetry Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing large volumes of high-resolution imagery and ensuring accurate alignment of overlapping photos. Handling data quality issues, such as inconsistent lighting or motion blur, can require additional processing and validation steps. Additionally, coordinating with GIS specialists, surveyors, and project managers is crucial to meet project specifications and deadlines, making strong communication skills essential. Staying updated with evolving software and hardware technologies is also important for maintaining efficient workflows.

What is the difference between Photogrammetry Engineer vs GIS Analyst?

AspectPhotogrammetry EngineerGIS Analyst
Required credentialsBachelor's in Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or related; GIS certifications helpfulBachelor's in Geography, GIS, or related; GIS certifications often preferred
Work environmentFieldwork, aerial and terrestrial data collection, office for data processingOffice-based, working with spatial data, mapping, and analysis
Industry usageMapping, surveying, remote sensing, constructionUrban planning, environmental management, transportation

While both roles involve spatial data, Photogrammetry Engineers focus on capturing and processing imagery for 3D modeling and mapping, often working with aerial data. GIS Analysts primarily analyze and interpret spatial data for decision-making and mapping. Both roles require GIS knowledge but differ in their core tasks and work environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Photogrammetry Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Photogrammetry Engineer, you need a solid background in geospatial science, mathematics, and experience with image processing, typically supported by a degree in geomatics, civil engineering, or a related field. Proficiency in photogrammetry software (such as Agisoft Metashape, Pix4D, or ERDAS IMAGINE), GIS systems, and familiarity with remote sensing tools are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you interpret data accurately and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for producing precise geospatial data and ensuring the reliability of mapping and modeling projects.
