What is the difference between Phlebotomy Externship vs Phlebotomist?
| Aspect | Phlebotomy Externship | Phlebotomist |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires completion of a phlebotomy training program; may include certification | Requires certification or license in many states; usually completed training |
| Work Environment | Educational setting, clinical practice, or internship environment | Hospitals, clinics, laboratories, blood donation centers |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Training phase, often part of educational programs | Full-time or part-time professional role in healthcare |
The Phlebotomy Externship is a training opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience, while a Phlebotomist is a certified professional performing blood collection duties regularly. The externship prepares individuals for certification and employment as a Phlebotomist, who then works in healthcare settings collecting blood samples for testing and diagnosis.

What Are Phlebotomy Externships?
A phlebotomy externship involves participating in a training program to learn the skills needed to work as a phlebotomist. Externships are shorter than internships, so you typically spend a few days or weeks working in a facility such as a blood donation center or during a blood draw drive. Your duties in these externships depend on your previous education and the degree program in which you are engaged. Some externships involve shadowing a professional lab technician, while others include drawing blood during a blood drive, performing a transfusion, or collecting blood samples for lab analysis.
