Job description

Position Summary:
The Pharmacy Tech In Training supports the retail and/or hospital pharmacy by assisting with medication preparation, dispensing activities, and customer service under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. This role plays a meaningful part in ensuring the safe, timely, and accurate delivery of pharmacy services while learning and practicing the foundational skills required for pharmacy technician licensure. As part of a collaborative pharmacy team, the Pharmacy Tech In Training contributes to smooth daily operations by performing entry-level tasks, maintaining organized work areas, and supporting clear communication with patients and healthcare staff. Through structured guidance, supportive leadership, and adherence to regulatory standards, this role helps build the core competencies essential for future independent practice as a pharmacy technician.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist pharmacists with basic dispensing functions such as preparing medications, labeling products, and retrieving items from inventory in accordance with established procedures.
  • Support customer service activities by greeting patients, answering general inquiries, and directing concerns to appropriate pharmacy personnel.
  • Enter patient, prescriber, and prescription information into pharmacy computer systems with close supervision to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness in the retail and/or hospital pharmacy, restocking shelves, monitoring inventory levels, and assisting with routine supply checks.
  • Follow all state and federal regulations, supervised workflows, and safety policies while actively learning required pharmacy technician competencies.
  • Participate in training sessions, meetings, and educational activities necessary to progress toward pharmacy technician licensure and competency.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Licensure is not required during the application and interview process.
  • Registration with the State Board of Pharmacy is required at the start of employment.
Educational Requirements:
  • Enrolled in educational program as required or accepted by the North Dakota State Board of Pharmacy for licensure, at the start of employment.
  • Yearly renewal of license by Board of Pharmacy and required amount of acceptable continued education as specified by the Board of Pharmacy.
Experience Requirements:
  • Retail and/or hospital Pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Excellent customer service and team skills needed for interaction with Pharmacy personnel, patients and medical staff.
  • Use of computers preferred. Good math skills needed.
Special Skills or Training Requirements:
  • Position requires professional demeanor, courteous attitude, ability to maintain and respect to a high degree the confidentiality of patient health information and data.
  • The ability to maintain active customer communications during working shifts.
  • The ability to work a variety of shifts based on company and customer needs.
  • The ability to travel for meetings and training seminars.
  • Adequate communication skills, oral and written, in order to accurately record information, orders, messages or other data.
  • Capability to communicate with medical staff and patients in a clear, concise, friendly, and professional manner.
  • Must effectively express thoughts, concepts, and directions through written media including correspondence, memoranda, and other company related documents.

Physical Requirements:
The Pharmacy Tech In Training frequently stands, walks, bends, and reaches while assisting with dispensing tasks and organizing pharmacy inventory. Light to moderate lifting may be required when handling medication totes, supplies, or product cartons. Adequate vision, hearing, and manual dexterity are essential to safely assist with medication preparation, operate computer and label-printing equipment, and communicate with patients and staff.
Environmental Requirements:
Work is performed in a retail and/or hospital pharmacy setting with routine exposure to medication storage areas, dispensing equipment, and frequent customer interactions. The role may encounter moderate noise levels, busy service periods, and frequent interruptions while learning pharmacy workflows. Strict adherence to confidentiality, safety, and infection-prevention standards is required.
