Performance Monitoring information

What is performance monitoring?

Performance monitoring involves the continuous process of collecting, analyzing, and reporting information about how systems, applications, or employees are performing. In an IT context, it helps organizations identify bottlenecks, optimize resource usage, and ensure systems run efficiently. In a business environment, performance monitoring can also refer to tracking employee or departmental productivity against set goals. The insights gained allow for timely adjustments and improvements, ultimately leading to increased efficiency and effectiveness.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in performance monitoring roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in performance monitoring often encounter challenges such as managing large volumes of data, identifying meaningful trends, and ensuring timely responses to performance issues. To address these, it is important to leverage robust monitoring tools, automate routine data collection, and establish clear communication channels with technical and business teams. Staying updated on industry best practices and regularly collaborating with stakeholders helps in proactively identifying potential performance bottlenecks and maintaining optimal system performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in performance monitoring, and why are they important?

To thrive in Performance Monitoring, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a background in data analysis or a related field, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with monitoring tools such as Splunk, Nagios, or SolarWinds, and experience with performance metrics and reporting systems are typically required. Effective communication, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability help professionals interpret data insights and collaborate with technical teams. These skills are crucial for proactively identifying and resolving performance issues, ensuring optimal system functionality and business continuity.

What is the difference between Performance Monitoring vs Network Monitoring?

AspectPerformance MonitoringNetwork Monitoring
Primary FocusTracking system and application performance metricsMonitoring network traffic and infrastructure
Tools UsedApplication performance tools, APM solutionsNetwork analyzers, SNMP tools
Work EnvironmentIT departments, data centers, cloud environmentsNetwork operations centers, data centers
CertificationsITIL, CompTIA Server+, Cisco CCNACisco CCNA, CompTIA Network+

Performance Monitoring focuses on tracking the performance of applications and systems to ensure optimal operation, while Network Monitoring concentrates on overseeing network traffic and infrastructure health. Both roles are essential in maintaining IT infrastructure but serve different aspects of system management.

At Frost, it's about more than a job. It's about having a flourishing career where you can thrive, both in and out of work. At Frost, we're committed to fostering an environment that reflects our values and encourages team members to be the best they can be. In joining our adaptable, integrity-driven team, you'll become part of Frost's over 150-year legacy of providing unparalleled banking services.
Who you are:
As a Performance Test Engineer, you are a subject matter expert. You will be responsible for developing and implementing testing strategies for banking applications. You are a problem solver who enjoys researching, creating, and executing test scenarios, and you are always looking for a ways to recommend improvements. You believe in effective communication and are excited to address potential problems and solutions to complex issues with integrity, caring, and excellence in mind.
What you'll do:
  • Design, develop, and implement performance testing strategies for banking applications to evaluate scalability, reliability, and system resilience
  • Create and execute performance test scenarios, including load, stress, endurance, and volume testing, using realistic workload models based on production usage and business requirements
  • Analyze application and infrastructure performance using monitoring and observability tools to identify bottlenecks, diagnose root causes, and recommend performance improvements
  • Partner with Engineering, DevOps, and Infrastructure teams to resolve performance issues and optimize application performance throughout the development lifecycle
  • Integrate performance testing into CI/CD pipelines and support automation-first, shift-left testing practices to improve software quality and delivery
  • Manage performance test environments, test data, and testing tools to ensure accurate, repeatable, and reliable test execution
  • Prepare and communicate performance test results, trends, and recommendations to stakeholders while supporting continuous improvement through performance tuning, incident analysis, and performance engineering best practices
  • Always take action using Integrity, Caring, and Excellence to achieve all-win outcomes

What you'll need:
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field or equivalent relevant work experience
  • 5+ years of experience in performance testing, performance engineering, or application architecture with demonstrated success establishing performance testing strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute load, stress, endurance, scalability, and benchmark performance tests using tools such as StresStimulus, JMeter, Gatling, LoadRunner, or comparable technologies
  • Knowledge of performance engineering standards, methodologies, and best practices, leading complex performance investigations, and influencing application architecture and technology decisions
  • Advanced technical expertise in performance analysis and root cause identification, including database diagnostics, JVM turning, thread and heap dump analysis, and infrastructure monitoring
  • Advanced technical knowledge of Java, containerized applications, APIs, microservices, and scripting languages such as Python, .NET, or Node.js
  • Proficiency with application performance monitoring (APM) and observability platforms such as Broadcom DX, Splunk, Dynatrace, OpenTelemetry or similar tools to analyze and correlate performance test results
  • Deep knowledge of performance analysis and optimization techniques for relational and NoSQL database environments
  • Proven ability to integrate performance testing into CI/CD pipelines and implementing shift-left performance engineering practices
  • Strong background utilizing source code management and version control platforms such as GitHub and Bitbucket
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with experience in Agile and regulated environments

Additional Preferred Skills:
  • Experience using AI or developer productivity tools, such as GitHub Copilot or similar technologies
  • Familiarity with enterprise integration technologies such as Red Hat Fuse, MuleSoft, Kafka, or IBM MQ
  • Experience testing high-volume transactional applications, batch processing, or distributed systems
  • Exposure to resilience testing, fault tolerance, or chaos engineering practices
  • Background supporting high available, mission-critical applications in a regulated environment
  • Ability to influence technical decisions and recommend performance improvements through data-driven analysis

Our Benefits:
At Frost, we care about your health, your family, and your future and strive to have our benefits reflect that. This includes:
