This role requires strong communication skills and the ability to translate data insights into actionable strategies that support both team development and business objectives. Effective collaboration ensures that performance initiatives are integrated and sustained throughout the organization.

To thrive as a Performance Manager, you need a strong background in analytics, goal-setting frameworks, and organizational development, often supported by a degree in business or human resources. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities set standout candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for driving employee productivity, aligning team objectives with organizational goals, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

What is a performance manager?

A performance manager seeks to create a system in which employees can perform at their best by creating clear goals and expectations. Rather than a traditional corporate system of employee appraisal and evaluation, performance managers try to communicate end goals and align each employee’s work with these aims. In this role, you may seek the development of benchmarks so that the company’s departments or groups can measure their progress concretely. This is an ongoing effort. Benchmarks and goals must change, so you must continually find new ways to measure progress and to inspire effort.

Job description

Senior Product Manager, Performance Experience
San Mateo or San Diego, hybrid

We are looking for a Senior Product Manager to own the employee and manager experience for our Performance Management Process. This role will partner closely with Talent Enablement & Development, People Technology, HR, business leaders, managers, employees, and technical teams to design, launch, and continuously improve our new performance experience using Betterworks.

This person will serve as the product owner for the performance management experience after go-live, translating talent strategy into clear product requirements, managing the internal roadmap, understanding the Betterworks roadmap, prioritizing enhancements, and ensuring the process and system are simple, useful, and adopted by employees and managers.

Responsibilities

  • Own the product roadmap for the Performance Management Process, including post-launch enhancements, backlog prioritization, release planning, and ongoing optimization.
  • Partner with Talent Enablement & Development to translate performance philosophy, process design, and talent priorities into Betterworks workflows, requirements, and user experiences.
  • Serve as the voice of employees, managers, HR practitioners, and business stakeholders in product decisions.
  • Partner with People Technology and technical teams to define business requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, configuration needs, integrations, testing plans, and launch readiness.
  • Build a clear intake, prioritization, and governance process for system and process enhancements.
  • Monitor the Betterworks product roadmap and assess which vendor capabilities should be adopted, tested, piloted, or deferred.
  • Use employee feedback, manager feedback, adoption data, support trends, and performance-cycle insights to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Lead user acceptance testing, issue resolution, release communications, and stakeholder readiness for new features or process changes.
  • Partner with HR, communications, learning, and change teams to support adoption through training, enablement materials, manager guidance, and launch communications.
  • Define and track success measures for the performance experience, including adoption, usability, completion, sentiment, support volume, and process effectiveness.
  • Build trusted relationships across Talent, HR, IT, business teams, and vendor partners to ensure the product supports strategic talent goals and day-to-day user needs.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in product management, HR technology, talent management, performance management, employee experience, or a related role.
  • Experience owning a product, platform, program, or major employee-facing process from implementation through continuous improvement.
  • Strong understanding of performance management processes, such as goal setting, check-ins, feedback, reviews, calibration, manager enablement, and employee development.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate business and talent needs into clear requirements, user stories, workflows, and prioritized roadmaps.
  • Experience partnering with technical teams, HR teams, vendors, and business stakeholders to deliver system or process changes.
  • Strong user experience orientation, with a passion for making employee and manager processes simple, intuitive, and useful.
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to use adoption data, feedback, and operational metrics to make product decisions.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, communication, facilitation, and influencing skills.
  • Comfort operating in ambiguity, balancing competing priorities, and making practical tradeoff decisions.
  • Experience supporting change management, training, communications, or adoption for a new HR or employee-facing technology.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Betterworks or another performance management platform.
  • Experience with Workday or other HRIS platforms, especially related to talent, performance, or employee data.
  • Experience supporting a large-scale performance management transformation.
  • Familiarity with agile product practices, design thinking, journey mapping, or human-centered design.
  • Experience working with HR, Talent, People Technology, or employee experience teams in a complex organization.
  • Certifications in product management, project management, change management, HR technology, or talent/performance management.

Success In This Role Looks Like

  • Employees and managers understand and use the Performance Management Process with minimal friction.
  • Betterworks is configured and enhanced in a way that supports the intended talent strategy.
  • The roadmap is clear, prioritized, and grounded in business value and user feedback.
  • Talent, HR, technical teams, and business stakeholders trust the product owner as the connective tissue between strategy, process, technology, and experience.
  • Post-launch improvements are handled through a disciplined product process rather than one-off requests.
