What is a performance manager?

A performance manager seeks to create a system in which employees can perform at their best by creating clear goals and expectations. Rather than a traditional corporate system of employee appraisal and evaluation, performance managers try to communicate end goals and align each employee’s work with these aims. In this role, you may seek the development of benchmarks so that the company’s departments or groups can measure their progress concretely. This is an ongoing effort. Benchmarks and goals must change, so you must continually find new ways to measure progress and to inspire effort.

How does a performance manager typically collaborate with other departments to drive organizational success?

Performance Managers work closely with leaders and teams across departments—such as HR, operations, and finance—to align performance metrics with organizational goals. They often facilitate regular meetings to review progress, provide feedback, and identify areas for improvement. This role requires strong communication skills and the ability to translate data insights into actionable strategies that support both team development and business objectives. Effective collaboration ensures that performance initiatives are integrated and sustained throughout the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a performance manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Performance Manager, you need a strong background in analytics, goal-setting frameworks, and organizational development, often supported by a degree in business or human resources. Familiarity with performance management systems, HR analytics tools, and project management software is typically required. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities set standout candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for driving employee productivity, aligning team objectives with organizational goals, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Job description

About HYBE America

HYBE America is part of HYBE, a global leader at the intersection of music, entertainment, and technology. We represent some of the world’s most influential artists and continue to expand our creative and cultural impact across the Americas. At HYBE, we believe in the power of music and foster a culture built on Passion, Autonomy, and Trust.

Position Overview

Our growing Creative & Production team at HYBE America is seeking an experienced and visionary Performance Manager / Director to lead the creative direction and execution of live and recorded performances for HxG artists. The ideal candidate is a seasoned performance creative who can translate an artist's identity and the character of their music into original, compelling stage concepts — from choreography and coaching to full creative direction across music, costumes, lighting, and stage design. This person will plan and produce performances that best showcase HxG artists' music, developing creative concepts for every aspect of an artist's performance based on their unique identity and the characteristics of each song, and collaborating with a wide range of internal and external partners to bring those ideas to life. Working hands-on with artists and trainees, this person will manage a talent pool of dancers and performance professionals and oversee performance elements across concerts, broadcast stages, and music videos — creating performances that inspire, comfort, and move audiences alongside a team of passionate professionals who take pride in delivering high-quality, original work.

This is a full-time, hybrid role based in our Santa Monica office, with in-person collaboration 3 days per week and remote work 2 days per week. Candidates must be based in or willing to relocate to the greater Los Angeles area at their own expense prior to their start date — we are not offering relocation assistance for this role, though it may be considered on a case-by-case basis for select candidates.

  • Define the creative direction for performance-related elements, including music, costumes, lighting, and stage design.
  • Oversee and coordinate all performance-related aspects of concerts, broadcast stages, music videos, and other productions.
  • Workload may increase during peak album production periods.
  • Domestic and international travel, as well as off-site work, may be required as needed.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in creating performances and choreography that effectively bring out the unique characteristics of songs.
  • A strong passion for dance and music, with a high standard for performance quality and execution.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide dance training across a variety of genres, in addition to choreography development.
  • Ability to submit a portfolio (submission of all portfolio materials listed below is required).
  • 2-3 choreography samples created within the last 12 months. (the more current, the better).
  • 1 pop choreo sample for artist/group (within the last 12 months. Choreography must be 2-3 minutes in length)
  • Optional supporting materials (performance/choreography reels, stage direction examples, performance/creative decks, resume, etc.)
  • Eligible to obtain visas for international business travel, with no restrictions on overseas travel.

It’s a bonus if you have

  • Experience in directing stage performances in domestic and international settings.
  • Ability to communicate in foreign languages (e.g., English, Korean, Japanese, etc).
  • Ability to manage administrative tasks related to performance production, including budget management.
  • Proficiency in music and video editing software.
  • Ability to execute and adapt choreography across a wide range of genres.
  • Ability to submit a video portfolio featuring original choreography created by the applicant.
  • Portfolio submissions may be provided via social media links or edited video files.

Core Competencies

  • Ability to create original choreography and performance concepts that align with global trends.
  • Strong interest in emerging trends and the ability to continuously learn and adapt.
  • Persistence and dedication to creating high-quality performances with a strong focus on execution.
