Perception Algorithm Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Perception Algorithm Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Perception Algorithm Engineer, you need a strong background in computer vision, machine learning, and programming (typically C++ or Python), often supported by a degree in computer science, robotics, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like TensorFlow, PyTorch, OpenCV, and ROS, as well as experience with sensor data (e.g., LiDAR, cameras), is crucial. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills for this role. These skills are vital to develop robust perception systems that enable autonomous vehicles and robots to interpret and interact safely with complex real-world environments.

What is a Perception Algorithm Engineer?

A Perception Algorithm Engineer is a professional who develops algorithms that enable machines—such as autonomous vehicles or robots—to interpret and understand sensory data from their environment. This typically involves processing data from cameras, lidar, radar, and other sensors to identify objects, track movement, and understand surroundings. Perception Algorithm Engineers work with computer vision, sensor fusion, and machine learning techniques to create reliable and efficient perception systems. Their work is crucial in making machines aware of their surroundings and enabling them to respond appropriately. They often collaborate with hardware, software, and robotics teams to integrate their algorithms into real-world applications.

What are some common challenges faced by Perception Algorithm Engineers when integrating their solutions into autonomous systems?

Perception Algorithm Engineers often encounter challenges when ensuring their algorithms perform reliably in diverse real-world environments, such as varying lighting, weather conditions, and sensor noise. Integrating algorithms with hardware requires close collaboration with robotics and systems engineering teams to optimize performance and latency. Additionally, balancing accuracy with computational efficiency is crucial, as perception modules must run in real time on embedded systems. Addressing these challenges involves rigorous testing, continuous model improvement, and effective cross-functional communication.

Job description

About us:
MicroVision is at the forefront of driving the global adoption of innovative perception solutions, with the goal of making mobility and autonomy safer. Our engineering excellence, based in Washington State, Washington D.C., Hamburg, Germany and Orlando, Florida, enables us to develop and supply integrated lidar hardware and perception software solutions. Our proprietary technologies enhance safety and automation across various industrial applications, including robotics, automated warehouses, and agriculture, and are instrumental in the development of autonomous systems. MicroVision's core technology, initially developed for the automotive industry, continues to accelerate advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving. Building on our history of providing technology to the military segment, our target offerings include semi- and fully autonomous airborne and terrestrial sensor systems. With our solid-state lidar technologies, encompassing FMCW and MEMS-based long-range lidar and flash-based short-range lidar, integrated with our onboard perception software, MicroVision possesses the expertise to deliver safe mobility at the speed of life.
To strengthen our team at the Redmond location, we are looking for a Senior System Test Engineer. As a key member of MicroVision's Systems Engineering team, you will collaborate with various technical teams in the company to design and take into production market defining LiDAR products.
Summary:
The Senior System Test Engineeris responsible forplanning, developing, and executing system-level verification and validation activities for LiDAR products. The engineer willbe responsible fortranslating system requirements into test strategies, designingand executing test plans, analyzing performance data, and driving issue resolution across hardware, firmware, optics, algorithms, and software teams.
The ideal candidate combines strong systems engineering fundamentals with hands-on test execution experience and a passion for solving complex technical problems. The engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams toidentifyissues, drive root-cause analysis, and ensure successful product development from concept through production release.
Your responsibilities:
  • Develop system-level verification plans, test cases, and test procedures from product and system requirements.
  • Define test strategies, acceptance criteria, and verification methods for functional, performance, environmental, reliability, and safety requirements.
  • Execute verification andvalidationactivities throughout EVT, DVT, and PVT phases.
  • Maintain traceability between requirements, test cases, defects, andverificationresults.
  • Develop automated test scripts, tools, and data analysis frameworks.
  • Improve test efficiency, repeatability, and coverage.
  • Support development and maintenance of system test stations and validation infrastructure.
  • Analyze large data sets generated during system testing.
  • Generate technical reports and present findings to engineering teams.
  • Track performance metrics and verification status against program milestones.

Our requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline.Master's degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in systemtest, integration, validation, or product verification.Experiencevalidatingcomplex electro-optical, embedded, or automotive systems.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Systems engineering principles
    • Verification and validation methodologies
    • Root-cause analysis
