What is a per diem substitute teacher?

Per diem substitute teachers are educators who temporarily fill in for regular teachers on a daily basis, often on short notice. They are called as needed and typically do not have a fixed schedule, working only on the days they are requested. Their main role is to ensure that classroom activities continue smoothly in the absence of the regular teacher, following provided lesson plans and maintaining a productive learning environment. Per diem substitute teachers may work in various grade levels and subject areas depending on school needs. This role offers flexibility but does not usually include benefits or guaranteed hours.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a per diem substitute teacher?

To thrive as a Per Diem Substitute Teacher, you generally need a bachelor's degree (often in education or a related field), a valid substitute teaching permit or certification, and a solid grasp of classroom management. Familiarity with digital learning platforms, school communication systems, and basic educational technology is typically required. Flexibility, strong communication, and the ability to quickly build rapport with students and staff are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining a positive learning environment and ensuring educational continuity during teacher absences.

What challenges do per diem substitute teachers face and how can they prepare for success?

Per diem substitute teachers often encounter challenges such as unfamiliar classroom environments, managing diverse student behaviors, and quickly adapting to various teaching styles and lesson plans. To succeed, it's helpful to arrive early, review any materials or instructions left by the regular teacher, and maintain a flexible, positive attitude. Building strong classroom management skills and being proactive in communicating with school staff can also make transitions smoother and ensure a productive day for both students and the substitute teacher.

Job description

About Sora Schools
Our mission is simple: build the replacement to the broken U.S. education system. No compromises, no reform. Most schools continue to do the same things they’ve always done: making students memorize content, test them, score them, and rank them. Unsurprisingly, students are losing their creativity and motivation, and are utterly unprepared to succeed in the real world. In our virtual program, middle and high school students work on passion-based projects that they get to create and take wherever they wish. They don’t attend lecture-based classes or read old textbooks — they’re building video games, writing fantasy novels, conducting scientific research, and more! We connect them with industry mentors to expose them to new careers and fields of study. Students learn not only the full breadth of academic subjects but also important soft skills and subjects such as financial literacy, philosophy, and more. Our school is organized in small, tight-knit cohorts so every group of students and faculty can feel close and engaged in their community. We’ve embarked on our journey to accelerate students toward their wildest dreams. We can’t wait for you to join us!
