To thrive as a Per Diem Medical Coder, you need a thorough understanding of medical terminology, ICD-10/CPT/HCPCS coding systems, and typically a credential such as CPC or CCS. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), coding software, and billing systems is essential. Strong attention to detail, time management, and the ability to work independently are standout soft skills in this flexible role. These competencies ensure accurate coding, compliance with regulations, and efficient reimbursement processes for healthcare organizations.

Frequent communication with supervisors and other team members is important to stay updated on assignment availability, process changes, and compliance requirements.

Per diem roles offer flexibility in scheduling and are often used to cover peak workloads, staff shortages, or specific projects.
