What is a per diem LMHC?

A Per Diem LMHC is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who works on an as-needed basis, rather than having a set full-time or part-time schedule. These professionals typically provide counseling services, such as therapy sessions, crisis intervention, or mental health assessments, and are called in when there is a demand for additional support. Per diem positions offer flexibility for both the counselor and the employer, allowing LMHCs to work in various settings, including hospitals, clinics, schools, or community organizations, depending on need.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem LMHC?

To thrive as a Per Diem LMHC, you need a master's degree in counseling or a related field, state licensure, and strong clinical assessment and therapy skills. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), telehealth platforms, and documentation standards is typically required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, empathy, and adaptability help you build rapport with diverse clients and manage variable caseloads. These skills are crucial for delivering effective mental health care in flexible, often fast-paced environments where both clinical excellence and efficient workflow matter.

How does scheduling and workload flexibility typically work for a per diem LMHC?

Per Diem Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs) often enjoy significant flexibility in their scheduling, as these roles are designed to provide coverage based on clinic needs or client demand. Typically, you can indicate your availability in advance, and assignments may range from a few hours to full shifts, depending on caseload fluctuations. This flexibility is ideal for professionals seeking work-life balance or supplementing other employment, but it may come with less predictability in hours. Collaboration with the core clinical team remains important, as per diem LMHCs are expected to communicate effectively regarding client care and documentation.
