What is a per diem cath lab nurse?

A Per Diem Cath Lab nurse is a registered nurse who works on an as-needed basis in a hospital's catheterization laboratory (Cath Lab). These nurses assist physicians during procedures such as angiograms, angioplasties, and the placement of stents or pacemakers. Per diem positions offer flexibility, as nurses can choose shifts based on availability and facility needs, but they may not have guaranteed hours or benefits like full-time staff. Their role is crucial in ensuring patient safety and providing specialized care before, during, and after cardiac procedures.

How does a per diem cath lab professional integrate with the full-time team and adapt to varying schedules?

Per Diem Cath Lab professionals typically fill in for staff shortages or during periods of high patient volume, so they must be adaptable and quick to integrate with different teams. They often work irregular or on-call shifts, which requires flexibility and the ability to quickly familiarize themselves with the facility's protocols and equipment. Strong communication skills are essential, as per diem staff coordinate closely with nurses, physicians, and technologists to ensure seamless patient care. This role offers exposure to diverse cases and can help build a broad skill set, but it also requires staying current with the latest procedures and maintaining professional relationships within the team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem cath lab nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Cath Lab Nurse, you need strong knowledge of cardiovascular procedures, patient assessment skills, and an active nursing license with experience in critical care or cardiac units. Familiarity with cath lab equipment, monitoring systems, and certifications such as ACLS and BLS are typically required. Exceptional attention to detail, quick decision-making, and effective communication help you excel in high-pressure, team-driven environments. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring patient safety and supporting successful cardiac interventions in a fast-paced, procedure-focused setting.
