Job description

The Fleet Service Manager will lead daily maintenance operations at our Leola and Honey Brook, PA locations (12 miles apart). In this hands-on role, you will build-out and oversee a maintenance shop team, ensure efficient repair, preventive maintenance workflows, and uphold DOT and company safety standards. You will work closely with and report to the Transportation Mgr. and the Transportation President to optimize uptime, control cost, and drive continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities
Fleet Operations & Maintenance
  • Oversee daily maintenance of tractors, dry van trailers, tank trailers, both liquid and pneumatic, tank straight trucks, yard jockey equipment and sales vehicles (but not limited to).
  • Build-out/manage the preventive maintenance program and diagnostic procedures.
  • Provide guidance and support as needed to help meet timely completion requirements.
  • Schedule, plan, and verify repair and maintenance work.
  • Play a support role in new vehicle replacement, upgrades, and specifications.
  • Provide support and solutions for breakdowns from start to finish to ensure the timely and efficient return to uptime.
  • Develop and maintain system or schedule to ensure both shops remain in a high state of cleanliness, and organization. Utilize inspection audits.
  • Investigate equipment failures, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.

Leadership & Team Management

  • Manage/build shop mechanic staff including hiring, training, coaching, discipline, scheduling, and reviews.
  • Conduct safety training with mechanics and ensure all shop personnel follow procedures.
  • Liaise with Dispatch team to prioritize work and communicate repair times and concerns.

Compliance & Recordkeeping

  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspections, licenses, permits, tags, registrations, DVIRS and warranties.
  • Prepare and maintain daily, weekly, monthly maintenance reports highlighting key metrics as required by President and/or Transportation Manager such as uptime, mean time to repair (MTTR), labor hours, parts usage, outside service costs, recuperation of costs, and variances to spend limits.

Budget & Inventory

  • Develop and maintain inventory of parts, supplies, and shop equipment system.
  • Manage budget or spend limitations associated with repairs, maintenance, and parts procurement.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce costs through vendor best pricing/favorable rates and internal efficiency best practices.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Extremely strong organizational and recordkeeping skills with the ability to multitask constantly.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing a heavy truck and trailer shop.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong software and technology skills, including Microsoft Office, ELD installs, removals, and use. Knowledge of a shop management system focusing on inventory, work orders, and warranty tracking. Trimble/PeopleNet ELD knowledge a plus. Co-Pilot use a plus.
  • Knowledge of vehicle and trailer systems including diesel engines, suspensions, brakes, steering, hydraulics, and electrical systems. Tanker-pumps, valves, fittings, more.
  • Class 7 inspection license.
  • CDL-A is highly preferred.
  • Welding experience with MIG and TIG. Experience with stainless steel, steel, and aluminum.
  • Will require a “hands-on” work floor approach as needed to optimize uptime to meet customer delivery requirements.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years as fleet service shop manager.
  • At least 7 years of direct tractor and trailer maintenance experience.
  • Liquid tanker (NON-HAZ) and pneumatic tanker repair experience.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in shops, offices, and outside environments.
  • Exposure to noise, moving vehicles, and occasional outdoor conditions which could range from very hot to very cold.
  • May require early mornings, weekends, or extended hours based on operational needs.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 60 lbs. Seek assistance when more weight is involved.
  • Climb ladders. Bend, sit, stand, kneel, carry, push, as needed.
