Job description

Overview
Under the supervision of the Library Operations and Circulation Manager and daily direction of other library staff, this person will provide a variety of library services in the Circulation Services area (including coverage of the Tech/Ref desk and Circulation desks). This position will work as needed up to 18 hours per week with occasional peak period of up to 20-25 hours per week. This position schedule will vary depending on library needs and student's academic schedule. This position is required to wear a Penn College provided shirt and approved slacks and shoes while on duty.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
  • Must be a current Penn College student. Required
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Valid and in State Valid Driver's License. Preferred
EXPERIENCE
  • Experience with MS Office applications and basic troubleshooting skills with computers and general office equipment, i.e. Printers, faxes, copiers. Required
  • Basic knowledge of searching the Internet, plus awareness and use of social networking and mobile technologies. Required
  • Experience interacting with others in a courteous, helpful, friendly and professional manner. Required
  • At least one (1) year work experience in a library or equivalent experience in a customer service environment. Preferred
ABILITIES AND SKILLS
  • Effective and accurate verbal and written communication skills. Required
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students, staff, faculty, and the general public. Required
  • Ability to become knowledgeable of library and college policies, guidelines and procedures. Required

  • Ability to alphabetize and file accurately in addition to strong organizational skills. Required
  • Proficiency or ability to learn various computer programs used in circulation services, including but not limited to the library online system, graphics and editing software, assistive technology equipment as well as basic operation and maintenance of office equipment. Required
  • Possession of valid driver's license. Preferred

Responsibilities
  • Provide coverage at library service desks, answering directional questions and providing information to library patrons, handling circulation services processes, responding to phone calls, etc.
  • Provide technical assistance in the reference area, assisting patrons with use of software and equipment in the library.
  • Assist patrons with the operation of computers, scanners, audiovisual equipment, printers, copiers, and other equipment or devices in the library.
  • Learn fundamental operations of commonly used software, hardware, and other equipment in the library (i.e. assistive technology equipment, etc.).
  • Provide general troubleshooting for library computers and ensure they are ready for use, i.e. stock paper and toner in printers, push in chairs, restart frozen computers, etc.
  • Perform basic circulation operations using established library guidelines and procedures.
  • Perform general stack maintenance.
  • Retrieve hourly library gate counts.
  • Understand, follow, and communicate library and college policies, guidelines and procedures to patrons using the library.
  • Act as a liaison between patrons and staff.
  • Attend customized library customer service training when scheduled.
  • ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Retrieve packages and magazines from the mail room, as needed.
  • Scan documents, pictures, and other files into electronic medium for use on the library website, electronic reserves, interlibrary loan and other areas.
  • Assist in opening and closing the library using established procedures under the direction of library staff.
  • May be required to work in other departments of the library.
  • Physical Standards and Special Job Features
    Ability to push a loaded book truck on wheels; weight of loaded book truck is dependent upon incumbent's own physical capabilities. Ability to reach shelves at heights of approximately 7 feet while standing on stool. Some lifting not to exceed 35 lbs., accommodations can be made for occasional exceptions. Standing for long period of time may be required.
