Job description

The Penguin Press imprint at Penguin Random House is seeking a Publicist to independently execute publicity campaigns while developing and maintaining strong relationships with the media. Dedicated to publishing quality nonfiction and literary fiction, Penguin Press brings to market ideas that matter, storytelling that lasts, and books that don't just start conversations, but ignite them. Its prestigious list of authors includes: Zadie Smith, Michael Pollan, Ocean Vuong, Ron Chernow, Celeste Ng, Greta Thunberg, Thomas Pynchon, Robert Sapolsky, Steve Coll, Chuck Klosterman, Mark Leibovich, Ottessa Moshfegh, Steve Inskeep, Emily Oster, Karl Ove Knausgaard, Alice Waters, Henry Louis Gates Jr., and Elif Batuman, among others. This is a fantastic opportunity to work with bestselling, award-winning authors on a wide variety of distinguished titles alongside a supportive team.
This hybrid position has responsibilities such as attending author and agent meetings as well as team and strategy meetings. We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance at least 2-3 days a week in our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, & PA).
Specific responsibilities include:
  1. Plans and executes media campaigns that will maximize exposure for authors and their books including securing national and local media, managing author tours, and creating press materials.
  2. Identifies new media opportunities to build on existing media contacts and brainstorms creative angles for our campaigns.
  3. Manages high-touch author care, interview prep and occasional media training, and attentive communication with agents, outside firms, booksellers, and key in-house departments.
  4. Develops and strengthens relationships with media and marketplace/industry contacts.
  5. Collaborates on our campaigns with Marketing, Sales, Editorial, and Subsidiary Rights.
  6. Presents Penguin Press list to broadcast, print, online media outlets, and lecture venues.
  7. Handles select department responsibilities and represents the imprint at various meetings, functions, and industry events.

  • Minimum 3 years of publishing publicity experience
  • Keen interest in serious nonfiction and literary fiction
  • A motivated self-starter who is able to work independently as well as in a collaborative team environment
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and pitching skills
  • Must be organized and able to handle multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively while also responding to urgent issues
  • Existing relationships with national and regional media contacts
  • Experience and comfort presenting in front of groups
  • Knowledge of the media and marketplace
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Knowledge of Muckrack and Publishers Work Bench, a plus

This hybrid position has responsibilities such as attending author and agent meetings as well as team and strategy meetings. The salary for this position is $66,500. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
