These positions typically require advanced skills, a strong track record, and may involve working in high-demand industries or executive-level roles.

What are PCB Design Engineers?

PCB Design Engineers are professionals who design and develop printed circuit boards (PCBs) used in electronic devices. They use specialized software to create layouts that ensure optimal electrical performance, manufacturability, and reliability. Their work involves collaborating with electrical engineers, selecting appropriate materials, and testing prototypes. PCB Design Engineers play a crucial role in the electronics industry by turning schematic diagrams into physical boards that power everything from smartphones to industrial equipment.

What is the highest salary for a PCB designer?

The highest salaries for PCB design engineers can exceed $120,000 annually, especially for those with extensive experience, advanced skills in CAD tools, and certifications. Senior PCB designers working in high-tech industries or in managerial roles may earn even higher compensation packages. Salary levels vary based on location, company size, and individual expertise.

How much do spacex PCB designers make?

PCB Design Engineers at SpaceX typically earn between $80,000 and $130,000 annually, depending on experience and location. They often require proficiency in PCB design tools like Altium Designer or Mentor Graphics and may need security clearances for certain projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PCB Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electronics engineering, circuit design, and PCB layout principles, often backed by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with PCB design software such as Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD, and familiarity with industry standards like IPC are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and ensure design accuracy. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering reliable, manufacturable, and high-performance electronic products.

What Is a PCB Design Engineer?

A printed circuit board design engineer oversees the creation of printed circuit boards (PCB) used in phones, computers, and most other electronic devices. As a PCB design engineer, your responsibilities include designing the layout of the unit to incorporate the appropriate components, making recommendations to improve existing designs, and overseeing the actual manufacturing of these products to ensure they meet industry and company standards. These boards are the backbone of modern-day electronics, acting as the central unit of anything that runs on a microchip or CPU. You must design the board in such a way that it meets the specific needs of each product. While there is no universal education requirement, most employers prefer at least an associate degree in an electronics or computer science related field. Most PCB design engineers work for computer hardware manufacturers, but some general tech companies have in-house design departments.

What are some common challenges faced by PCB Design Engineers during the product development cycle?

PCB Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as meeting tight deadlines while ensuring design accuracy, managing complex multilayer layouts, and adhering to strict manufacturing and regulatory standards. Collaborating effectively with hardware engineers, mechanical designers, and manufacturing teams is essential to balance design requirements and production constraints. Staying updated with evolving CAD tools and design-for-manufacturability practices also plays a significant role in ensuring successful project outcomes.

Are PCB engineers in demand?

PCB design engineers are in high demand due to the growth of electronics, consumer devices, and IoT applications. Skills in CAD tools like Altium Designer or Eagle, along with knowledge of manufacturing processes, enhance job prospects in this field.

What is the difference between Pcb Design Engineer vs Electronics Engineer?

AspectPcb Design EngineerElectronics Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning printed circuit boards (PCBs)Designing electronic circuits and systems
Skills & CertificationsPCB design software, schematic capture, IPC standardsCircuit theory, component selection, simulation tools
Work EnvironmentElectronics manufacturing, PCB layout firms, R&D labsElectronics product development, engineering firms, R&D labs

While both roles involve electronics, a Pcb Design Engineer specializes in creating the physical layout of PCBs, focusing on manufacturability and design standards. An Electronics Engineer designs electronic circuits and systems, often overseeing the entire electronic product development process. Both roles require a strong understanding of electronics, but their daily tasks and focus areas differ significantly.

Electrical Engineering Technologist โ€“ PCB & Prototype Support

Up to $70,000 Base Salary โ€ข Greater Milwaukee Area โ€ข 100% Onsite Join a steadily growing, specialized aerospace and defense manufacturer delivering high-reliability electronics Work directly alongside design engineers to execute full-cycle prototype assembly, bench-level testing, and circuit troubleshooting

  • EXPERIENCE Hands-on electronics or electrical technician background required (Associate's degree preferred, or 10+ years of advanced trade depth in lieu of a degree)
  • CORE SKILLS Bench-level PCB assembly and soldering (IPC standards), electrical schematic fluency, and independent circuit diagnostic instincts
  • SCHEDULE & TRAVEL Standard full-time first shift with minimal domestic travel (~20 days per year total)
  • COMPENSATION Up to $70,000 annual base salary (commensurate with bench experience) + comprehensive benefits and 401(k)
  • WORK TYPE Full-Time, Permanent, W-2 direct hire position (100% Onsite role; nimble, highly collaborative engineering lab)
  • LOCATION Greater Milwaukee / Northeast Wisconsin corridor (Must reside within a comfortable commuting distance)
  • COMPLIANCE Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship requirements. High-reliability defense programs require strict adherence to regulatory standards.

If you are an electronics specialist who is tired of being trapped in a repetitive assembly line role or siloed at a rigid corporate giant, this engineering support seat is built for you. We are an established, highly stable manufacturer with over a decade of consistent year-over-year growth, specializing in custom electronic systems for military and aerospace applications. Because our team is lean and agile, you won't get lost in the shuffleโ€”your day-to-day contributions are highly visible, deeply impactful, and directly recognized.

This is not a monotonous, single-process job. Our programs rotate, our designs evolve, and you will work across the entire lifecycle of highly engineered hardware. You will serve as the right hand to our design engineering team, transforming blank schematics into physical, functioning prototypes, diagnosing complex board failures under test conditions, and supporting high-reliability production runs. For a hands-on technologist who takes pride in extreme precision, this role provides an ideal learning environment and a clear, defined path to expand into broader engineering responsibilities over time.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Assembling, soldering, and populating complex multi-layer PCBs across prototype development and specialized low-volume production programs to strict IPC standards
  • Troubleshooting electrical assemblies, components, wire harnesses, and circuits independently to locate root-cause failures and support ongoing engineering evaluations
  • Collaborating directly with design engineering to bring up initial boards, execute functional product testing, and manage smooth manufacturing startup activities
  • Assisting in the development of Bills of Materials (BOMs), sourcing specialized electrical components, and managing engineering lab equipment calibrations
  • Preparing detailed technical documentation, including draft assembly drawings, test reports, and structural calculations for electronic designs
  • Supporting continuous quality assurance initiatives in strict alignment with AS9100D aerospace and defense protocols
