Job description

Job Overview

Fairview is looking for a Nursing Station Technician (NST) Nursing Assistant/Health Unit Coordinator HUC for the Outpatient Observation Medical Surgical Unit at Fairview Ridges Hospital (Burnsville, MN) to work under direction of nursing personnel to provide patient care while functioning as a nursing assistant and as a health unit coordinator.

This position is a 0.6 FTE, working 48 hours per 2 week pay period. This position works 12-hour shifts, every third weekend rotation (Fri,Sat,Sun), on the night (7pm-7:30am) shift.

The Nursing Station Technician is responsible for assisting the professional caregiver in the delivery of patient care, transporting patient and / or equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms, reordering, and stocking supplies. Performs a wide range of clerical, transcription, and maintenance of patient care unit desk area functions. Coordinates the flow of communication on a patient care unit. The NST does not work autonomously but under the direction of the professional nurse. They may or may not be given a patient care assignment based on unit needs and the discretion of the manager /charge nurse.

The Nursing Station Technician is a hybrid position consisting of both Nursing Assistant and Health Unit Coordinator roles to deliver direct patient care and administrative duties.

In this role, you will work under the direct supervision of a professional nurse to demonstrate excellent customer service, teamwork and communication skills with patients, families, and the healthcare team on a fast paced unit.

Other job duties include:

  • Patient care such as personal hygiene, vitals, daily activities, repositioning, transporting, and feeding
  • Maintaining unit desk area functions such as answering phones, processing admissions, discharging and transferring forms, transcribing orders, assembling patient charts and ordering tests
  • Setting up and maintaining patient rooms
  • Ordering and stocking of supplies

Performs other tasks as needed.

License/Certification/Registration

  • Successful completion of Fairview’s OnTrack Nursing Assistant training program or another Fairview sponsored Nursing Assistant program

OR

  • Six months of recent direct care experience in a long term, home care or acute care setting. (Appropriate roles may include, Nursing Assistant, PCA, Resident Assistant or Emergency Room Technician

OR

  • Current enrollment in an LPN, RN or Nurse Practitioner program, and completion of one (1) semester of clinical rotation within the program

OR

  • Current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry upon hire. This requirement does not need to be maintained throughout employment and is not required if subsequently transferring into another Nursing Assistant or Nursing Station Tech or Nursing Station Attendant position 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers) certification required. Ontrack participants much be able to obtain Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification upon completion of the OnTrack program.
