Job description

Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented Payroll Specialist with hands-on payroll processing experience to support payroll operations in a high-volume environment. This position is responsible for accurately processing payroll transactions, performing payroll adjustments, administering time and absence functions, and providing support to employees and managers regarding payroll-related inquiries.
The ideal candidate will possess practical payroll knowledge, understand the impact of payroll transactions on employee pay, and demonstrate the ability to independently identify and resolve payroll discrepancies.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Process payroll-related transactions in Workday, including pay adjustments, earnings corrections, and retroactive pay calculations.
  • Review, audit, and process time and attendance data for payroll accuracy.
  • Administer absence management and time tracking processes.
  • Analyze payroll exceptions and investigate discrepancies prior to payroll processing deadlines.
  • Process retroactive pay adjustments and benefit-related payroll corrections.
  • Run, review, and reconcile payroll, time, and absence reports.
  • Respond to employee and manager inquiries through AskHR cases and other communication channels.
  • Provide training and guidance to employees and managers regarding timekeeping, payroll, and absence processes.
  • Maintain payroll records and ensure compliance with company policies and payroll procedures.
  • Assist with payroll audits and special projects as assigned

Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of payroll processing experience in a corporate environment.
  • Experience processing payroll transactions, payroll corrections, retroactive pay adjustments, or timekeeping functions.
  • Experience working with payroll systems such as Workday, ADP, UKG, PeopleSoft, SAP, or similar HRIS/payroll platforms.
  • Strong understanding of payroll terminology, earnings codes, deductions, taxes, timekeeping, and absence management.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Outlook and Excel.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent mathematical aptitude and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting strict payroll deadlines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience supporting at least one complete payroll cycle from data review through payroll completion.
  • Must be able to explain retroactive pay calculations, timecard corrections, and payroll adjustments during the interview.
  • Experience auditing payroll data for accuracy and researching discrepancies.
  • Experience with employee timekeeping systems and payroll reporting.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Workday Payroll, Time Tracking, or Absence Management experience.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation or coursework toward certification.
  • Experience supporting payroll processing for large employee populations.
  • Experience performing payroll audits and reconciliations.
  • Knowledge of payroll compliance requirements and wage-and-hour regulations.

Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience processing payroll transactions and resolving payroll issues, not simply providing administrative support. Preference will be given to candidates who can clearly explain payroll concepts, payroll calculations, payroll adjustments, and timekeeping processes based on prior payroll experience.
