Job Description

The Consultant Subject Matter Expert (CMT Materials Engineer 4) will perform engineering services and act as pavement experts to provide professional engineering services in their specialty areas of pavement material engineering; and quality management as related to these services. The responsibilities will include: consulting with internal and external parties; data evaluation; researching innovative materials and design methods, developing materials specifications, providing written advice and recommendations, material suitability analysis, and other duties as assigned. Services will be performed under the supervision of a Professional Engineer where necessary, and results are subject to review. Some travel may be required

Core Responsibilities

  • Assist clients in anticipating and resolving any issues associated with pavement materials, pavement design, and/or pavement engineering; meet with appropriate project personnel to identify pavement materials related issues and recommend solutions consistent with project documents and Quality System manuals.
  • Analyze pavement data provided by technical staff to determine engineering solutions and provide engineering recommendations and conduct engineering investigations and plan work including data collection and analysis using established procedures, performance of engineering calculations, and participation in evaluating the feasibility of alternate solutions.
  • Provide direction, leadership, and mentoring to technical staff and less experienced engineers regarding pavement design requirements.
  • Prepare engineering reports and statistical analysis of testing results, and create, maintain, and deliver data evaluation reports at all levels from executive summaries to detailed performance reports.
  • Maintain standards and consistency while minimizing the impact on work schedule and cost and ensure engineering services are completed on time.
  • Provide incidental support services in claim resolutions.
  • Work with other Atlas team members and clients in a collaborative environment including updates with site managers and coordination for system improvements and perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor to support engineering services.
  • Maintain a safe environment, following all applicable OSHA guidelines and Atlas practices.

Youll thrive here if you have

  • PhD in Civil Engineering or related field preferred; P.E. preferred.
  • 10 years of professional relevant experience required, including experience working on roadway and highway related projects (preferred).
  • A valid driver's license.
  • Effective written, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to work as part of a team involving staff, clients, and outside agencies.
  • Strong problem-solving skills (including identifying data quality issues), results oriented and able to complete tasks on deadline with little supervision, and able to make good decisions using sound, professional judgment.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office (Word & Excel).
  • Knowledge of materials, approved methods, and equipment used in physical testing of construction materials; pavement engineering requirements as they relate to Caltrans Special Provisions, Standard Specifications, and Construction Manual; and quality management systems as they relate to the physical testing of construction materials (all preferred).

    The expected salary range for the position is displayed in accordance with the states law. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience.
