What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Pattern Grader, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pattern Grader, you need a solid understanding of garment construction, math skills, and experience in pattern making, often gained through vocational training or a fashion-related degree. Familiarity with CAD software, pattern grading systems, and digital measuring tools is typically required. Attention to detail, precision, and effective communication with designers and production teams are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate scaling of patterns for multiple sizes, leading to efficient production and high-quality, well-fitting garments.

What are Pattern Graders?

Pattern Graders are professionals in the fashion and garment industry who take a designer's original clothing pattern and create a range of sizes from it. They use specialized software or manual techniques to adjust the dimensions of a pattern so that it can be used to produce garments in various sizes while maintaining the intended fit and style. Pattern Graders play a crucial role in ensuring consistency and accuracy in mass garment production, working closely with pattern makers and designers to translate designs into scalable patterns.

What are some common challenges Pattern Graders face when working with complex garment designs?

Pattern Graders often encounter challenges when translating intricate garment designs into different sizes while maintaining the intended fit and proportions. Complex styles with unique seam lines, drapes, or embellishments require careful analysis and precise grading techniques to avoid distorting the designer's vision. Collaboration with pattern makers and designers is essential to clarify design intent and to troubleshoot any issues that arise during the grading process. Staying up-to-date with digital grading software can also help streamline the workflow and reduce errors.

Job description

Description

We are seeking a detail-oriented and technically skilled 3D Associate Technical Designer to support WM Kids apparel programs, with a focus on 3D pattern corrections across multiple categories. This role partners closely with the Technical Design team, as well as overseas offices and factory-based 3D teams, to ensure accurate execution of pattern corrections throughout all fit stages.ย

The 3D Associate Technical Designer plays a critical role in validating that physical samples can be successfully produced and that revised 3D assets accurately reflect Technical Design feedback. This position requires strong pattern knowledge, precision, and the ability to manage deadlines within a fast-paced, calendar-driven environment.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with the Technical Design team to measure, adjust, and execute required e-pattern corrections across all fit stages prior to productionย
  • Apply Technical Design feedback to update 3D assets, ensuring corrections are accurately reflected in patterns, graded nests, and visual rendersย
  • Own and manage the workflow, prioritization, and deadlines for all 3D submissions in alignment with WM Kids production calendarsย
  • Partner with overseas offices and factory-based 3D teams to ensure clear communication and timely execution of updatesย
  • Confirm that revised 3D assets support physical sample feasibility and meet brand and retailer specificationsย
  • Ensure all 3D renders, measurements, and graded nests remain accurate, current, and production-readyย
  • Maintain organized documentation and version control for all 3D pattern updates and submissionsย

Application Requirements

Please submit your portfolio link or attach it via the documents tab when applying.

Requirements

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Technical Design, Patternmaking, Fashion Design, or a related field preferredย
  • 1-3 years of experience in 3D technical design, patternmaking, or related apparel development rolesย
  • Strong understanding of patternmaking, pattern corrections, grading, and fit across children's apparel categoriesย
  • Hands-on experience working with 3D pattern software and digital e-patternsย
  • Familiarity with mass-market production calendars and retailer-specific requirements (WM experience a plus)ย
  • Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational and time-management skillsย
  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with Technical Design teams and overseas partnersย
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
