What is pattern drafting?

A Pattern Drafting job involves creating templates used for manufacturing clothing and other sewn products. Pattern drafters translate design concepts into precise patterns that ensure proper fit and construction. They work with designers, tailors, and manufacturers to develop patterns manually or using computer-aided design (CAD) software. Their role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of fabric behavior.

What does a pattern drafter do?

A typical day in Pattern Drafting involves creating and modifying garment patterns based on design specifications, ensuring measurements and garment details are accurately translated. Pattern drafters collaborate closely with fashion designers, sample makers, and production teams to resolve fit issues and make necessary adjustments. Daily tasks often include using CAD software, reviewing prototypes, and updating pattern libraries. This role requires a keen eye for precision and frequent communication across departments to meet production timelines and maintain design integrity.

What skills and qualifications are needed for pattern drafting?

To excel in Pattern Drafting, you should have a thorough understanding of garment construction, spatial visualization, and measurement techniques, typically supported by education in fashion design or apparel technology. Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software, patternmaking tools, and sometimes certifications in technical pattern drafting are often required. Attention to detail, creativity, and strong communication skills help pattern drafters interpret design concepts and collaborate effectively with designers and production teams. These competencies are essential for producing accurate, production-ready patterns that ensure the quality and fit of finished garments.

Is pattern drafting a good career?

Pattern drafting is a specialized skill in the fashion and apparel industry, involving creating templates for clothing construction. It requires knowledge of garment construction, sewing, and pattern-making software, and can offer opportunities in fashion design, production, and tailoring. Career prospects depend on industry demand, experience, and skill level.

Drafting Technician

Phase Technologies LLC

Rapid City, SD • On-site

$22/hr

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Retirement, PTO

Re-posted 7 days ago

Job description

The Role

Phase Technologies builds digital phase converters and VFDs - power electronics that keep farms, factories, and pumping stations running across the country. Every product starts as an engineering model that has to become something the floor can build the same way every time. Turning that model into a buildable package is what this role is about.

As our Drafting Technician, you own the seam between engineering and the floor - the exact point where a design becomes a product the production team can build. You'll take released 3D models and turn them into everything production runs on: sheet metal drawings, wire lists, work instructions, and the fixtures that make every unit come out the same. It's detailed, hands-on work with real variety - a sheet metal drawing one hour, a fixture or a change order the next - and what you release this week is on the production floor next week.

Most people never see their work leave the drawing board. You will - every single day.

What You'll Do

  • Turn released 3D models and engineering designs into the documentation the floor builds from
  • Create clean, build-ready drawings from existing models, including sheet metal parts and flat patterns
  • Generate wire lists and drawings straight from the design
  • Create assembly instructions clear enough to build from correctly the first time
  • Design the manufacturing fixtures and tooling that make production faster and repeatable
  • Own Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) end to end - keep drawings, wire lists, and BOMs current as designs change, and trace the full ripple of every change across affected assemblies
  • Keep the drawing set and engineering BOMs accurate and under tight revision control
  • Be the floor's go-to for build support - answer build questions, clear documentation roadblocks, and close the loop between engineering and production

What You Bring

  • An associate's degree in drafting, or a related field - or equivalent hands-on experience; what you can do matters more to us than the credential you hold
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks (or comparable 3D CAD)
  • The ability to read and interpret engineering models, drawings, and dimensioning/tolerancing
  • Sharp mechanical aptitude and an eye for detail - your drawings and instructions are accurate, complete, and easy to build from.
  • The instinct to catch a problem and chase down its full impact - what else does this touch? - instead of stopping at the problem in front of you
  • Integrity - you flag the issue even when it's inconvenient, and your documentation means exactly what it says

Bonus Points

  • Sheet metal and fabrication drawing experience
  • Wire harness or electrical documentation experience
  • Fixture or tooling design experience
  • Experience with ECO, PLM, or BOM-management processes
  • Time on a manufacturing floor (engineer-to-order or high-mix / low-volume a plus)
  • Familiarity with an ERP/MRP system (we run NetSuite)

Why Phase?

Most drafting jobs bury you. A ticket. A queue. A drawing nobody opens. Work that never leaves the building. Not here. This is not drafting that dies in a folder.

Here, the drawings and instructions you produce hit the production floor fast and become real product - drives running irrigation pivots, water systems, and oil & gas sites around the country. You'll be trusted with real ownership early, and backed by a team that would rather get it right than get it fast, with real room to grow your career.

If you take pride in getting the details exactly right and want to watch your work become real product, we'd like to hear from you. Apply, and let's talk.

Compensation & Benefits

  • $22/hr and up, based on experience
  • Paid time off (10 days in year one) and 8 paid holidays
  • Medical (multiple plans), dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
