What is a patient transport volunteer?

Patient Transport Volunteers are individuals who assist hospitals or healthcare facilities by helping move patients safely and comfortably between different departments, such as from their rooms to treatment areas or diagnostic appointments. They provide support to both patients and staff by offering a friendly presence, ensuring patients feel comfortable, and sometimes assisting with wheelchair or stretcher transport. Volunteers in this role are trained in safety procedures, communication, and patient privacy. Their work helps improve the efficiency of hospital operations and enhances the patient experience.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a patient transport volunteer?

To thrive as a Patient Transport Volunteer, you need a basic understanding of patient safety, physical stamina, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with wheelchair operation, hospital transport protocols, and infection control procedures is beneficial, and some programs require completion of hospital orientation or training. Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and reliability help volunteers interact positively with patients and hospital staff. These skills ensure safe, supportive, and efficient patient movement within healthcare facilities, directly impacting patient comfort and workflow.

What challenges do patient transport volunteers face, and how can they be addressed?
