Job description

The Registered Nurse First Assistant is first and foremost a Registered Nurse. The practice of professional nursing is the systematic application of specialized knowledge and skill, derived from biological, physical and behavioral sciences to care, treat, counsel and health teaching of individuals who are experiencing changes in normal health processes or who require assistance in the maintenance of health and the prevention or management of illness, injury or disability and demonstrates this through application of the Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice and Standards of Professional Performance defined by the American Nurses Association. Recognizes that each patient is a unique individual and has the right to quality nursing care that ensures the mutual goal set between the Registered Nurse First Assistant and patient. Assures patient rights and privacy are protected, recognizing personal, interpersonal and social systems. The nursing process facilitates the promotion, maintenance and restoration of an individuals health, incorporating knowledge of growth and development through the life span. Must be knowledgeable of nursing practice, procedures, competencies and patient care standards as well as regulations and guidelines pertaining to nursing care.
The scope of nursing practice includes the teaching, direction and supervision of less skilled personnel in the performance of delegated nursing activities. May delegate acts, tasks or functions and bears responsibility for the acts, tasks or functions within the scope of delegation.
Accountable to the ethical and professional standard as defined on the ANA code, the ANA Nursings Social Policy Statement, the State of Michigan Public Health Code and the ANA and AORN Standards of Clinical Practice. Accountable to adhering to the standards set by the regulatory agencies such as, but not limited to, the Joint Commission, Conditions of Participation of Health Care Financial Administration and Michigan Occupational Health and Safety (MOSHA). These accountabilities require individual competence in nursing practice and the recognition and responsible acceptance of individual actions and judgments.

Responsibilities:
  • Successful completion of competency based orientation and maintenance of core competencies for RNFA.
  • In collaboration with the patient and/or family, and healthcare team, participates in open discussion to identify mutual goals based on the nursing assessment and nursing diagnosis.
  • Diagnoses, treats and evaluates the human response to actual or potential health problems/needs.
  • Evaluates the outcomes of the nursing plan of care and revises it as necessary.
  • Assess, detect, monitor and attempt to prevent complications associated with health situations or treatment plans.
  • Notify the physician of patient condition and response to nursing intervention appropriately and documents this action.
  • Responsible for insuring that patient's pain is assessed, treated, reassessed, documented and evaluated. Adheres to policies and Procedures for.

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:
  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Licensure / Certification / Registration:
  • Required Credential(s):
    • BLS Provider credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date.
    • Certified Certified Registered Nurse specializing in Operating Room obtained within 18 Months (1 1/2 year) of hire date or job transfer date.
    • Licensed Registered Nurse obtained within 3 Months (90 days) of hire date or job transfer date.
Education:
  • The Registered Nurse must have an Associates of Applied Science in Nursing (AAS) Degree or Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) or RN Diploma at start date. BSN is required within six (6) years of start date. Incumbents hired into position prior to 1/1/2015 are grandfathered with their existing educational degrees.
  • Complete and pass a CCI/AORN approved First Assistant course within two (2) years. AND Must be proficient in the Perioperative practice of nursing as a scrub/circulator for a minimum of four (4) years. Consideration regarding length of training period will be given to Registered Nurses who have previous experience as an RNFA. One (1) year of continuous employment at LHM.
