UVA Health is seeking an experienced supervisor to lead the administrative support team within Anatomical Pathology. This newly established position offers the opportunity to shape a high-impact leadership role , develop a growing team, and strengthen the workflows that support specimen management, diagnostic services, and patient care.
The Role
As Supervisor of the Pathology Admin Support Team, you will provide operational leadership for non-technical staff supporting Surgical Pathology, Histology, Cytology, and pathologists. You will oversee a team responsible for specimen accessioning, material tracking, consult coordination, autopsy intake, and other essential administrative functions.
This is a dynamic role for a collaborative leader who can create clarity in an evolving environment. You will learn the team's functions, assess existing workflows, and help employees manage changing volumes and priorities. Success requires sound judgment, a strong compliance mindset, and the willingness to work alongside the team when operational needs demand it.
An average day may include:

• Leading, coaching, and developing pathology administrative support staff

• Balancing workloads in response to daily volume and operational priorities

• Monitoring specimen accessioning, consult tracking, and the movement of incoming and outgoing pathology materials

• Resolving unusual specimen , documentation, or workflow issues through research and cross-functional collaboration

• Reviewing, updating, and developing policies and procedures

• Supporting audit, inspection, and regulatory readiness

• Identifying process gaps and leading workflow improvements, including A3 problem-solving initiatives

• Participating in hiring, performance management, staffing planning, counseling, and corrective action

• Collaborating with pathologists, Histology, Cytology, Surgical Pathology, and other clinical and operational partners

• Serving as a trusted resource for employees navigating complex or unfamiliar situations

The team supports operations that ultimately inform diagnosis and treatment. While direct patient contact is limited, the supervisor may occasionally help manage sensitive autopsy-related calls involving patients' family members. These interactions call for professionalism, composure, empathy, and thoughtful communication.
The strongest candidates will bring at least three years of relevant supervisory experience, experience developing and maintaining policies, and a record of leading teams in regulated environments. Anatomical Pathology or healthcare experience is preferred, but leaders from financial services, human resources, information technology, risk management, compliance, or other highly regulated industries may also bring valuable transferable experience.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent Required, Bachelor's Degree Preferred.
Experience: 3 years or relevant supervisory experience required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job requires sitting for prolonged periods and repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs.
The pay range for this role is $25.22 - $50.44 hourly. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
