What Is a Parts Runner?

A parts runner is a member of a team in an automotive parts warehouse or supplier. Your primary role in this career is to deliver parts to auto shops or repair shops promptly after those shops order the parts. Occasionally a customer may also come into a parts warehouse to buy or pick up a part, at which time the parts runner is responsible for going into the warehouse area to grab that part and bring it to the front for the sales team. You typically drive a pickup truck on your deliveries. Your other job duties and responsibilities may include helping with inventory.

What is the difference between Parts Runner vs Delivery Driver?

AspectParts RunnerDelivery Driver
CredentialsNone typically required, may need a valid driver’s licenseValid driver’s license, sometimes specific endorsements
Work EnvironmentAutomotive shops, warehouses, dealershipsVarious locations, including residential and commercial areas
Industry UsageAuto parts stores, repair shopsRetail, food services, courier services
Job FocusTransporting auto parts within a facility or nearbyDelivering goods to customers or businesses

While both roles involve transportation, a Parts Runner primarily moves auto parts within a specific location or nearby, focusing on supporting automotive businesses. A Delivery Driver, however, transports goods over longer distances to customers, often requiring a valid driver’s license and adherence to delivery schedules.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Parts Runner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Parts Runner, you generally need organizational skills, attention to detail, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with inventory management systems, handheld scanners, and basic vehicle operation is typically required. Reliability, time management, and effective communication make someone stand out in this role. These skills ensure timely and accurate delivery of parts, supporting efficient operations and minimizing downtime in automotive or industrial settings.

What does a Parts Runner do?

A Parts Runner is responsible for delivering automotive or equipment parts to technicians, mechanics, or different departments within a company. Their main duties include picking up, transporting, and distributing parts quickly and accurately to ensure repair and maintenance work is not delayed. Parts Runners often organize inventories, keep records of deliveries, and may also assist with stocking shelves or managing warehouse inventory. This role is essential for maintaining efficient workflow in automotive shops, construction companies, or warehouses.

What are some typical challenges a Parts Runner might face during a workday, and how can they be managed?

Parts Runners often work in fast-paced environments where timely delivery of parts is crucial to keeping projects or repairs on schedule. Common challenges include managing multiple delivery requests simultaneously, navigating large warehouses or unfamiliar locations, and ensuring accurate documentation for parts picked up and delivered. Staying organized, using route-planning tools, and maintaining clear communication with technicians and supervisors can help manage these challenges effectively. Proactively addressing issues and being adaptable are key traits for success in this role.
